Midi, SoundMax - trouble

Hi Guys (& Gals)
I have read many posts on the forum and elsewhere before posting and hope to get better news here :-)
I am a newbie and recently purchased MC4. I can't get my Midi files to record (/export) to mp3.
Okay, so I reasearched and researched and realised I had to do the Tutorials, so I tried Tutorial 1. (simple, hah.) But, I can't hear the Midi files in the tutorial after I am done with the changes.

So here are my specs.
Windows XP, MC4, SoundMax sound card.

and here is what happens.
When I use "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" as the output for my Midi files I can hear them fine, when I change this to "Cakewalk TTS 1-1" I can't. In the Cakewalk Synth, I see that the input is from "Cakewalk TTS 1-1 Output:1 Stereo" and the Output is "SoundMax Digital Audio", but I can't hear any sound out of my comps speakers.
I have followed Tutorial 1 completely but now luck, some posts talk about SoundMax being the problem.
Please give me good news, I don't want to go shopping for another sound card.

My basic aim is to get a mix I created (midi + audio) to a mp3. I can get the audio piece over just fine, but midi is not coming thru. Before I get into bouncing tracks I think if I can get Tutorial 1 working, I will be able to figure out what is wrong.

work thru tutorial #8 first instead. it explains inserting a softsynth (TTS-1) in detail. it looks like you've got it set up correctly from what you've said, but I don't know for certain.

if you can hear MIDI output using MS GS Wavetable and the audio, then your soundcard is not the bottleneck at this time, you ARE getting sound out of it if that works.

as far as not shopping for another soundcard, you may change your mind when you realize the latency associated with the one you have, but we'll see.

after working thru tutorial 8, come back and let us know if that works or not and if not, tell us where you are having problems.

    Hi Beagle,
Thank you for your suggestion. I tried working thru tutorial 8, but still it is the same issue.
The moment I add a Cakewalk soft-synth and have my midi output to it, I can't hear them.
    Any other suggestions?
My Cakewalk Synth is set to Ouput to my sound card "SoundMax Digital Audio"
    Pleas help.. someone.

No it is set to Cakewalk. What's DXi? I don't see that as an option.

In the track view, where you select the inputs and outputs for each track.... ensure the output from each MIDI track is assigned to the Cakewalk TTS-1 soft synth. (that's the DXi I think...just found out recently myself!)

yes - when you insert a softsynth it inserts a DXi or VSTi OUTPUT track into your project. you have to have your MIDI track's OUTPUT set to that DXi track for sound to be heard.

Ok, now it works. Partly my fault and partly inconsistency in the software.
All my tracks (audio and midi) were on "solo" mode "S", now I have removed it and everything is ok. Maybe I am missing something else too, still can't explain why Cakewalk Synth was not playing the midi tracks.
