Strings Softsynth

Hey! A little help here.

I'm looking for a strings sound that sounds like the bow is moving rapidly back and forth across the strings. Not just the gentle violin / cello sound you usually get with a synth. I'm looking for something a little more agressive with more attack.

Know what I mean?

I'm still very new to using synths/midi so any suggestions here will be quite welcome. I want to create sort of like an orchestra swell, but with plenty of agression and attack.

Thanks in advance!!!

    Got really fast fingers?

Just kidding. All of the better samplers provide multiple bow styles. Kontakt does. You switch between bowing styles with special MIDI notes, which is cool because you can toggle between two styles rapidly.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Yeah, I think you're looking for 'sforzando' or 'forzando' - depending on their spelling.

Anything in Rapture or TTS-1 or Dimenson Pro that would provide something good?

As a string player I'm pretty sure it's a "tremelo" that you're looking for. A Sforzando is when the note is first played "Forte" and then is held out softer after the initial attack.

I would like to find one of these too!

TTS1 and garritan pocket both have tremolo strings patches, there should be one or more in the dimension pro strings as well.

You can probably route a wheel or slider to make the volume swell, or use a volume envelope.

Ah, thanks for that. Not a string player, and some of those terms can be confusing, if the description is a bit unclear.

Hey, if you have the time for it, maybe make a short list of all the string versions you can come up with, for noobs like us and describe them in laymans terms, and how to tell the diff between related ones. Think that would get stickied ASAP.

Here is a pretty good list of different string playing articulations / techniques; it's called common violin terminology:

Well if someone could make a list and add an mp3 example of the exact sounds, I'd host it without thinking twice. Descriptions are nice, but some terms, as they admit in the page, aren't the clearest.
