Mastering...
Hi Guys What software do you use for Mastering? I'm after something that is pretty simple. I'm happy with my mixes just want to get them mastered. I want to slightly beef up the sound, make my tracks louder and add that shine to them to make them sound more professional.

Mastering is an art all it's own. I's not something you can just click a button and "poof," finished product. HERE'S A LITTLE GUIDE ON IT A lot of folks round here seem to like Ozone but it's not an EZ button. Mike

Not really, especially when the subject is huge like mastering. This subject has books written on it that are aver 500 pages. Theres more than enough info online and in here to look up. Myself, i learned mastering by doing allot of reading and just doing it. Its been over 3 years since i started mastering my own stuff and im still learning every day, so to re hash on something this big is just too much. To answer the posters question, i use sonar 7 producer and some wave plug ins to master, i also use Ozone inside sonar to master also. I so everything inside the box, it easier and better for me Cj

I use a plug-in called Optimaster that is part of the Scope system of software (not much use to you if you don't have Scope). For the insanely simple projects that don't warrant a lot of futzing around I use that Elephant mastering plug from Voxengo (they have a few different types of mastering compressor available). Waves L2 is pretty common in the big leagues (if you don't mind the dongle). Ozone gets a lot of lip service around here so it must be good and has gotten good reviews in the magazines. I'd be inclined to buy Ozone if I didn't already have Optimaster. Sonar 7 has some pretty decent tools too btw. You may find everything you need right there (assuming you have SP7). Otherwise, I'd follow the previous suggestions and go with Ozone. Let us know what you get and how you like it!

ORIGINAL: PTV Hi Guys What software do you use for Mastering? I'm after something that is pretty simple. ORIGINAL: Chinchen These guys really dont like to rehash stuff do they? Yeah, some attitudes around here can be pretty "holier than thou" and elitist, often dismissing simple, direct questions by suggesting that you must embark on a long, dark journey before you are worthy of sharing their knowledge. There are two complete software packages that will quickly get you up and running. They each have a bunch of presets to get you statrted, and then, as you become more "enlightened", you can tweak to get the sound you're after. One is Ozone, it tends to impart a bit of a "synthetic" feel to your tracks. Then there's TRacks. TRacks' is very accurate with respect to tube modeling so tweaking knobs will yield more than a linear result. Most of TRacks presets are too "hot" for my tastes so you may find that you'll have to tame the settings a bit. A cool feature of TRacks is that you can use the components independently in your host. So you can insert the compressor in a track or maybe just the limiter, etc. IMO both of the GUIs of these packages suck, but for different reasons. Ozone's is too futuristic Matrix aesthetic with the dark green and black. TRacks is too "retro" and hard to see and tweak.

ORIGINAL: Anubis IMO both of the GUIs of these packages suck, but for different reasons. Ozone's is too futuristic Matrix aesthetic with the dark green and black. TRacks is too "retro" and hard to see and tweak. Good points. I remember looking seriously at Ozone a couple of years ago and was kind of put off by that garishly awful color scheme. It actually hurt my retinas to look at it for more than a few seconds. The user interface is a very subjective thing though. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that like it. Sometimes there are substitute skins that you can apply to change the interface colors (not sure if Ozone supports that or not - check for yourself). If you're like me, you'll probably not be spending hours and hours looking at it. I developed (or found) a few presets that work 99% of the time on the stuff I do here. So it's a case of pull up a few presets until you find something that works and away you go. But if you are the type that likes to sit there and tweak until the wee hours of the morning, Anubis' comments may ring true to you.

Ozone looks more like how people thought the 'future' would look like in 1977. It has a 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' look to it...

Hi there Paul. I've done a bit of research and a bit of digging down deep into my ridiculously large VST folder and I've come up with ten free plug-ins that might help a bit. I'd put them here but I've moved them to a NEW THREAD in case anyone else is interested. Steve

I'm happy with my mixes just want to get them mastered. I want to slightly beef up the sound, make my tracks louder and add that shine to them to make them sound more professional. To get started, if you have Sonar 7, try Boost 11. The whole point of Boost 11 is to make tracks seem louder. And, it is pretty much a one button (well, I think maybe two) tool. In addition to the tips above, Reason's pre-packaged Mastering presets can be a good way to learn, on a limited budget, what sorts of devices are used for different styles and at what settings.
