[Track] Fallin Awake

http://www.xmission.com/~razorwit/mp3/Fallin_Awake.mp3

This was originally supposed to be for the "Sad Songs Track Challenge" thingy by :10: but I missed the deadline.

On an ironic side note, this is the first stuff I've done after putting a fair amount of time and resources into my vocal signal path (lots of auralex, U87, API pre's to MOTU) and the first thing I do after recording is crush the vocals into near-oblivion.

Also the first thing I've done in P5 for a while.

Comments welcomed.

Dean

This is really a great track! Nice songwriting, structure, and also good production. The vocals are really well done too. I have nothing bad at all to say about this song, in fact I think it is really wonderful.

Thanks for sharing this one. Did you do all of this in P5?

I listened to this song once this morning and it's been stuck in my head all day! It really is a fantastic production and the vocals sound superb. Man, you have a great voice for this kind of music.

    Wow, thanks all.

Ramon, yep, did the whole thing in P5. Strings are Kontakt3 and Dim Pro, lead synth and bass are Rapture, Absynth for some noisy texture, an acoustic guitar and a small diaphragm condenser for the guitar, and battery3 for drums. Crushed the hell out of my lead vox with some UAD plugs and PSP Vintage warmer (again, really destroyed all the work I had put into nice pretty mic signal chain).

Crypto and all, thanks for the kind words about the vocals and such. Incidentally, I decided today that the API pre's aren't what I want, so I'm sending them back and getting some Great River pres to get more of that nice Neve smoothness.

Hrm....mebbe I'll beg :10: to put me on the compilation :)

Despite all of the undeniable instrumental talent in this forum, the appearance of vocals in this track is very welcome - especially so as they are well sung and recorded. Dean, this is a fantastic track and I very much enjoyed listening right through. In fact, I've just hit the "play" button once again. And while P5 is an application full of gadegtry to aid the electronic musician, it's nice to see it's use in a linear acoustic/pop format; surprising even. I would have guessed this was a Sonar-driven track, so kudos for seeing the application through to it's full potential. What a memorable song - great arrangement too. Thanks for sharing ...

Just about a repeat about all said above. And the strings are really nice - something circa 70's about them (in a good way).

actually, not 70's, but eleanor rigby vibe - tho a little cleaner, sharper production (I only have it on LP, so maybe that is it).

    Hi all,
Thanks again for all the kind comments. No matter how much I do this it's always nice to get a pat on the head, especially from other musicians.

AT - when you made the Eleanor Rigby comparison, were you referring to the sound or composition? I ask because there is a particular sound that I've noticed lately in my strings production and I'm wondering if it's really something that I'm hearing or if I've just been listening too much and am grasping at straws.

    Thanks
    Dean

    Dean,

maybe a little bit of both. I forgot to add "edit" to the Rigby comment - struck me after I listened to the song and after I wrote the upper comments. I'd have to listen again with that in mind, but I imagine it is the way the vox/strings work in the chorus of Rigby that struck me as similiar in your piece.

Production wise, the strings are sharper in yours, and tho I'm sure I've heard Rigby on the radio, I know it from the LP, so that is not surprizing. Anyway, since we both had the same thought, you must be onto something somewhere there.
