Country Western Stuff

Hello,

Haven't posted any music in a while - progress has been s l o w.

Wrote this over a year ago – may have posted it. Hated the lead vocal – the pitch was so off it was painful. My girl friend kept bugging me – she said, get another singer if you like the song. She was right, two weeks ago I got a good country singer (Ami Jane Russell) to come in and sing the lead – she did great.

If anyone is up for a little CW up tempo jump tune, here you go. As with all my stuff – I record in my apartment using Sonar 5, Telecaster (Squire), Fake Hofner and simple keyboards. Good clean fun.

Very nice. As someone who did a lot of time in country bands playing bender guitar and pedal steel I feel qualified to say this is greaty CW number. It could use some pedal steel though.

Nice catchy melody. Good vocals, the harmonies could come up a tad.

I've also paid my dues playing C&W in honkytonk bars with chicken wire across the stage. This tune's a brilliant production, with a very clean Nashville-type sound. That vocalist was quite a find, she's definitely got the authentic chops.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Yo Manny,

Good, well written country song, well-performed and well recorded. The lyrics are particularly well written.

My only quibble, and this could be purely matter of personal taste, is that I would like the instramental backing more up front, to give it a bit more country-rock bite. To be sure, the vocalist can take this level of exposure just fine.

    Cheers,

First of all thanks guys for taking the time to listen and comment – I’ve been commenting on others songs over the last year and felt like a half participant because I’d not posted anything recently.

G Hacker – thanks for the positive feedback. Yeah, my chords are all over the place in this one but it all sort of fits together somehow.

Daryl – pedal would be great. I got a b-bender last year but so far I’ve done more harm with it than good – just don’t have the chops yet – looks easy – but it isn’t. Will Ray video is helping but it’s still taking time (I can’t imagine what learning pedal steel would be like).

    Dave
    – thanks for the kind words. It’s amazing what a good singer can do – I felt so much better about the tune as soon as she started singing (that’s how bad the previous vocal was). Singer is a Brooklyn NY girl…weird world. Me from Jamaica NY and girl from Brooklyn doing C&W.

Bert – ah the lyrics. I appreciate that you took time to listen to them. I spend a lot of time on lyrics – maybe that’s why the vocals are so up front on most of my stuff. I was happy with these – they came together nicely.

Larry – thanks. I’ll buy you a beer when you make it to NY.

I agree--this is great. She's very good! It's a great song. My sister sings country quite often--sounds like something she would sing too.

Really enjoyed this one, Manny. Everyone is doing that part just right.

I really like how the lyric flows over the melody, very natural feel.

    Solid!

Great song! I like the harp, nice touch :-) Nice guitar work, great recording, and yes, she's quite a singer. I would bring the BU vocals up just a weence.

Janet – thanks. Actually that is your sister singing. Yes, I’m kidding.

Ed – thanks for the thumbs up!

Robby – thanks for the listen and comments. I know what you mean about the BU. They were originally sung to first lead vocal (a different singer) and not quite in sync, so I pushed them back a bit.

Wow! Manny, great stuff. What a voice .. richly mixed too, ambience is clearly present but not in the way. Instruments all played very well, nice clean production. All the edges in the mix have that nicely rounded quality. Great work Manny, well done.

Thanks Bill, words of encouragement for sure! I know a lot of us do this purely for the love of the music and the music goes unheard (hell, I can’t even get my kids to listen to my material - they’re just not interested) and it’s always nice to feel the positive energy from the crew at this site. I know I can count the number of people that will hear my music on my hands (no toes required) – feedback from the folks here means a lot – thanks.

By the way – you’ve got some very nice tracks on your site (your Looking Forward, Looking Back is playing as I type this).

The instruments need to be more upfront. Suond like they are playing behind a glass door and the singer out front. I'm listening on some hopeless 'Genius' brand PC speakers...so my comment may not be all that genius.

I would ditto the other coments on the singer being a good find. Her voice reminds me of Lyn Anderson just a bit. I will also ditto the coment of bringing the instuments more up front because her voice has enough power to still stand.

Nice work, excellent song. The tele sounds great and could be a bit more up front. I really like the melody and lyrics.

All of us played country at some point. That's what ya do with an acoustic guitar!

Montezuma – if you were the only person to mention this than I might think it’s your speakers. Several others have said the same thing. So…

Thatsastrat and Scott – thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. I’ll go back and play with the mix a bit – it can’t hurt to spend a little more time with it and I’ll experiment with the levels. I really do appreciate the feedback.

    Thanks guys.

Manny, you just might have posted this before, the title really rings a bell. This vocalist is really terrific, almost good enough that I don't mind the guitar being a little low in the mix. Good arrangement, I like the stops. I seem to hear a pedal steel but it's really low in the mix. excellent song, strong lyrics.
