vox stay on one side only
I'm putting some vocals in a project and no matter what i do to spread them out in stereo they stay on one side only. I did the copy/nudge and put one on the far other side but still it only sounds on one side. the other vocals (background) are spread out perfectly. What is going on here? thanks

did you record the vocals into a stereo track and they're only on the left side?

I did the vocal at around 9 to the left ,which means they're darn close to center. they sounded only in one side. I put another down and laid it at 64 to the right and still it only sounds in the left. everything else in the mix is spread out nicely and exactly i you would think it should.

I don't think you understood my question. If you record a mono instrument with a stereo input it will put all of the signal on the left channel only. if your track which you recorded those vocals on has two channels, upper and lower in the track view, but there's only a waveform on the lower one, then that's what you've done and you'll need to split the track to mono and delete the empty one before continuing to clone and pan.

Beag, you're right on. This never happened before because i never clicked the stereo to mono button prior to recording before. How do I go about splitting the track to mono and deleting????

Rick, Just gave your song a listen over at Songs. Fun tune. The stereo thing seems to be a huge stumbling block for many. You have gone through the steps to get stereo from the E-MU0404 from previous threads, right? Now, to get your vocals cenetered, we need to back out of that. Select your input as one of the mono options, ie L or R. Now change your stereo interlace in the track to Mono(Change the button that looks like (><) to (>). This will center your vocal track. What this does is distribute the sound between both sides of the stereo field. If you record the single Mono input as stereo, it will show up as one side of a L & R pair. Look at your track as you have it recorded now. It is split, with a definite waveform on one half, and nothing on the other, right? If you don't want to re-record the track, try this. Select your vocal track by clicking on the track #. The entire track should highlight. Go to Edit>Bounce to Track. In the Channel Format box, select Mono.Click OK. This should mix your track to a single waveform, which will sound centered in your speakers. Let me know how that goes.

I did as you said Robert and it still looks the same. Just a signal on the bottom of the two paths.

In the waveform view is the bottom the right or left?

Yes, if it's mono, you can pan freely. There should only be one waveform graphic. I believe the top is the left, and the bottom is the right, but you should only see that in a stereo track. Do you see a single or dual waveform?

I see only a single in the new tracks. I ask because i want to see how the previous tracks will figure into the mix. since i can not mix by ear (mono set up) i need to calculate what is lying where. crazy , i know.

With a single waveform, that only shows signal strength. there is no left to right reference, and it is centered in your stereo field. If you create a panning envelope, you will have a visual indicator of where you are left to right. If you hover the cursor over the envelop line, it will tell you where you are. Or, the pann control will show where you are. How are you minitoring your sound now?

i do a mix from what i think it should be and shrink it to mp3 then sync it to a small mp3 player with headphones to hear if i'm close.

No How, I posted a screenshot of using a stereo effect over at the MusicTown forum, it is not in MC, but the concept is the same. The vocal was recorded in a stereo 24 bit track, and then a stereo effect was added and echo was placed on one side and dynamics on the other. The dynamic is a compressor/limiter/exciter effect.

It is split, with a definite waveform on one half, and nothing on the other, right? I think i got the vox in a fairly decent position thanks to your help. To avoid this happening again let me try to go through this: In the track I'm recording on i would, 1) leave it in >< to record. 2) click > to mix into a panning field. That seems to be what i have done in the past.

When recording mono instruments or microphones, in the track view, you need to select a mono input, either left or right. Most have the name of the sound card, followed by left, right, stereo, or mono. For instance, my interface's input names are 'Focusrite Left', 'Focusrite Right', and 'Focusrite Stereo'. I select left when recording mics. That will give a single pannable waveform.

Close, Rick. Select your input like Greg said, and set the track to Mono(>) before you record. This will center your track, and it saves disk space.

I do believe i tried it as you (Greg and Robert) said (before recording select left or right input then select the > )and i still get one wave form on the bottom and an inactive wave form on the top but no single wave form. Maybe i was doing it backwards....i'll try again when i get home. Thank you both.
