Strange Problem

I finally have Sonar and my computer working well together!!!
But all of a sudden, when I hit the on button on my computer, it wouldn't start.

It was random at 1st, then started doing it more often.

Now, it has gotten to the point where when I finally do get it going, Sonar will sort of freeze up on me. Meaning the Gui will stop responding, but the music keeps playin, usually with no way to stop it, even with the space bar.

I'm starting to think it a bad (new)power supply, or maybe the connections in the computer have bcome tarnished from humidity, or the battery is dieing. Any ideas?

Any help appreciated, I just want to make music and am tired of screwing around with the software and computer all the time!

Thanks in advance!

Peace,
Johnny Philko

Same thing happened to me. Bad PSU. Swap it out with a new one and you should be good.

Make sure you have the little wires from the front panel on the computer plugged onto the right pins on the motherboard. Sometimes that can be tricky because there's no standard setup. Every motherboard is a little different.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks a lot! The wiring is ok, because it used to work for a while at least.

I'm on my way to get a 430 watt ThermalTake supply now. Hoopefully this will take care of things! :-)

    Hi guys,

I installed the new power supply and still no luck. I found that the power on switch has quit working! I'm hoping the better power supply will make things run better though.

One thing that I was surprised to find out is that with the old power supply, if I sut down the computer and forget to turn of the monitors I get a really loud obnoxious sound that sounds like it will hurt the monitors and my ears.

After installing the better supply, I accidently turned off the computer with the speakers on and this noise changed considerably to a mild sound coming out of what sounds like one monitor only and it doesn't sound like it will hurt anything.

I assume it is better filtering from the power supply, but don't really have a clue what it is! :-)

So it seems to be having some effect already! :-)

have a look at ya device manager (via control panel)

view resources, see if the graphics card + sound card sit near each other or share the same IRQ.

have you changed anything on the pc software wise, even window updates.. driver updates?

you say your running WDM? try turning off share device in background (I don't have v6 so can't tell you)

also perhaps switching to m-audio's asio driver instead of WDM? the latest version for your OS off the m audio website?

ur running the 1010? but which one the breakout box one? (not the LT) have you checked the connector for that.

if it's sharing the same IRQ, put the card in a different slot if you have one free. when your reboot, it should put it on a different IRQ

Once I had the power button quit on me...it was actually the button itself that gave out. I swapped the connector with the reset connector and just used the reset button to turn the PC on and off. Also, on my old P4, the heatsink was so clogged with crud that my computer would overheat and just shut down and refuse to power up until it cooled down...but if your power button failed from a cold start with a new power supply, then that can't be it.

Hope you don't have a gaming card in there (or that you never plan on having two of 'em), coz even 430 watts is cutting it close on new machines. I've got a 1000 watt Antec Quatro-whatever PS in mine (but I'm running a pair of 8800GT video cards).

Have you considered that the power button itself might be shot? Switch it with the reset switch and if the problem is still there, you'll have ruled it out.

    Hi Guys,

Yes, it was the power switch itself. :-) I already googled for a replacement switch but the only page that had them was a russian page.

Swapping with the reset switch is a great idea!!! I will do that until I buy a new case!!

    Thanks a lot!!! :-)

I noticed that, with the talk of directx 10 and the increased power consumption..

I had an experience of a psu almost frying a MOBO years ago, so as standard I fit 600 watt one as minimum.

isn't there an electronics part shop near you (in the uk, maplins etc) , just de-solder the old connector.. and solder the new one to the exsting wire (just make sure you have the correct pins) or I bet you probably could buy one with the connector/wire done. I remember having to do a power switch , but had to use heat shrink rubber (the bigger version handy for putting mixing desk cables together).. all it's doing is just completing the circuit.. replacing the whole case is a bit drastic, but up to you
