Gating drums?

So I want to replace our drummer's kick drums using Drumagog. Drumagog is missing a lot of the hits, though, for whatever reason. He has some soft, uneven hits here and there, but even the soft hits are clearly visible above any background noise. I started to go through and manually cut out the in betweens. But that will literally take me about a month to do all of the songs this way. Is there another way to gate on Guitar Tracks?

    Use a noise gate.

I can't remember if GTP3 came with a free one or not (I think it did) but if not there are free vst gates out there like Blue.

    Hi there Sam

Here are a few free VST's that should do the job for you - I've tried them all out on a drum loop and they all work pretty well - see which does the trick for you:

    * The BlueFilter Z mentions is up to the task, as long as the kick drums' frequency is lower than the rest of the kit - CLICK HERE to go to the Blue Line Pack download page - the free download button for the whole set of VST's is at the bottom of the page. With a sample drum loop, I set this up with the HP [High Pass] filter and the 4 pol setting [whatever that is!] and pulled the frequency up until the kick just about disappears, at roughly 340Hz.

    * The Antress Modern Painter plug in, available to download FROM HERE does the job equally well - this has a multiband function as well as some peresets [including the high pass you'll need].

    * CLICK HERE to download the GVST GBand band-pass filter VST; choose the Grymmjack skin version - the interface is much easier to use. This is a combined high and low pass filter and seems to work OK.

    * The last one is very easy to use; the TAL VST Multi Filter has a high pass, low pass and band pass filter - the download page IS HERE.

Hope that helps Sam, let us know how you get on.

    Steve

Thanks! I uploaded one of these. But I also found one on GTPro. It was under the effects marked "squeeze", so I missed it.

Sam, the GT3 'Squeeze' unit is a compressor.

It won't be much use to remove the kick drum - it maybe only help in accentuating the other stuff in there, such as the snare drum.

You may want to use a notch filter as well to catch the errant decay of the drum.

I think he accidently filtered us out too! But I was thinking he should use a noise gate. But now that I have read his post again I see that that probably wouldn't work. I would try a high pass filter and see what happens. Also you can really just take a measure or so that repeats and cut out the bad parts, bounce it to a clip and then just loop that or put it wherever you want in the song and keep doing that until you have the whole song laid out. I think that would be the best sounding and easier than cutting the whole song.

Hey Z, I think we mentioned before that it's kind of nice to get some feedback, positive or negative, that's why I asked.

Yeah I know! But sometimes they will let us know, and then other times we don't hear from them until they have another problem! Even yet other times their internet will be disconnected because they haven't paid their bill. Anyone seen the troll lately?
