Well I'm a total novice too, and I found using the midi cables very easy - just connect from the midi outlet on the keyboard to the midi in on your soundcard. Don't know about USB sorry, but someone who does will be here shortly.

make sure the cables are connected correctly. MIDI IN on your keyboard should be connected to MIDI OUT from the cable and visa versa.

there's a little keyboard icon in your systray when MC is running. when you press a key on the keyboard, does one of the little red lights come on?

that's backwards unless cakewalk labelled them differently - which is possible.

but not hearing sound is not the same thing as not getting it to work. if you get the light to come on then it's working - you're sending data. in order to HEAR something, you have to insert a softsynth because MIDI is only data, not sound.

work thru tutorial #8 and you will understand how to insert a softsynth. come back and ask more questions if you have problems with that.

ok i was able to acquire some sound but it turns out the sound rom music creator is coming out of my keyboard and not my speakers. I dont understand how to record my keyboard onto the program.

if your sound is coming from your keyboard then the output of the MIDI track is set to the keyboard instead of the softsynth. did you successfully insert the softsynth from tutorial #8?

Keep it simple... on you midi keyboad the midi connector labeled OUT should have a midi cable that runs from there to the midi IN on your sound card. That will allow you to get the midi from the keyboard into the computer.

Do tutorial #8 on inserting soft synths into MC and you should be able to get sound from the program. If you are stuck...post again.

The (only or main) reason you would want to have midi out of the soundcard back to the keyboard would be to have the midi track in MC "play" through the synth in the keyboard. I never use that ability.
