2x2Gb or 4x1Gb DDR2 memory sticks?

I´m near of make an update in my studio machine and I´m in doubt. The new system will be a Q6600+Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3.
1- As the motherboard can to use memory in dual mode, what have better efficiency: two sticks of 2Gb each or four sticks of 1Gb each?
2- Will have this decision any impact when using the /3gb switch in the Boot.ini file?
Thank you for your time and help.

On edit: I´m using Sonar 7.02 PE under WinXP 32 bits.

If you get the 2 GB sticks and you have 4 slots that will give you 8 GB for Vista 64. Otherwise there is no reason to get one over the other. Its simply more efficient to get the 2 GB sticks. It gives you options for further expansion.

It will have no bearing on whether you need/use the 3GB switch in boot.ini There are however some schools of thought that say the 4 x 1 Gb would be faster than the 2 x 2Gb sticks, but whether or not it's noticeable or depending on how close to the edge of the envelope you want to run your Q6600?

    +1 to what john said

years ago they used to install pc's with 4 cheaper chips instead of 2... and to upgrade you'd have to replace the lot..

With some mainboards, using the 2x2 GB option is the way to go, because when you fill up all slots in dual channel mode, the RAM clock drops to the next lower frequency. I don't know if this is true with your specific board or not, though...

its easier to get 2 sticks to play well together than 4

    No kidding, jack.

(ew's point about the RAM clock stepping back is a nice one, btw - I've 'upgraded' once to only endup with a slower system too - can yank it right out again)
