PC crashes randomly

I'd like to know if there is any point in using a registry scanner / cleaner / repair program for Windows XP

My PC crashes (no BSOD only switches off) randomly and sometimes frequently.

Its become extremely annoying.

Any suggestions?

Regards,

I had this happen on a machine before and it was caused by dust on the videocard heatsink fan. When I checked, the dust was slowing the fan down to a stop at times.
The machine would run fine, then overheat and reboot itself.

    Control Panel>Administrative Tools
Right Click Event Viewer and send shortcut to desktop
    Open Event Viewer Highlight 'application'
    Right click>Clear all Events>No
Repeat for Security and then System

You now have a clean event log to monitor whats going on. Next time it reboots then open up the Event Viewer and see if there is a clue.

I have one at work that does this quite often and it seems to be a memory quirk.
