Quick tutorial question

Good morning fellow sufferers.
I have got my EMU usb soundcard connected up and as I dont have headphones yet Ive got a lead from the headphone socket into my stereo. I've played a music video on youtube and it comes through very nicely, so the soundcard is working. I then tried tutorial #1 and it is silent. I moved the EMU to the top of the output list (keyboard is the only other midi device and ive tried it checked and unchecked) but nothing. Reading through the forum I see a few mentions of tutorial #8 but should I be hearing sound in #1? Or do I need to do #8 first???
Cheers

Total noobie here, but I do think that you will need to insert a soft-synth into the project to be able to hear any MIDI tracks you have there. It is quite easy - just open the track view and go to INSERT/SOFT SYNTH, and choose CAKEWALK TTS-1. An options box appears...now I can only give you the set up I have got, so here goes....

ensure that the following are CHECKED in the tick boxes:

    SYNTH PROPERTY PAGE
    SYNTH RACK VIEW
    FIRST SYNTH AUDIO OUTPUT

Ensure the following boxes are UNCHECKED:

    ALL SYNTH AUDIO OUTPUTS STEREO
    ALL SYNTH AUDIO OUTPUTS MONO

Then open the track itself so you can see the inputs/outputs, and select MIDI Omni as the track input, and Cakewalk TTS-1 as the track output. Your MIDI should then be played through the TTS-1 synth.

Hope this is some help, and that I haven't put you on the wrong track. I'm a total noob, but there will be a few others here who know it inside out - they're in the USA though so the time difference means you gotta wait a while until they get up lol.

rob's got it right - in fact with a quality soundcard like you have purchased, you have to do tutorial #8 first, learn to insert softsynths, then go back to tutorial 1.

I just wonder how hard it would have been for cakewalk to have had a wizard to get you through this minefield. The tutorials are not exactly straightforward. Doesn't it say something like "fast" on the box?????

    You are indeed!

Just the other day, I was applying some compression to a mix.
I hit the wrong button, and accidentally turned my brother into a turtle.
