BEGINNER HELP NEEDED!! piano roll question....

Hi,

I have used SONAR 2.2 in he past but recently upgraded to 3 PRODUCER EDITION. Well, I have never used the piano roll or plugins. For drums I am using Drumkit From Hell Superior. There were several issues I had just to get it to run properly. So far, I think I have it installed correctly becasue I get the main screen and I am able to see and hear the drum pads. I have yet to create and bounce a project in it.

My main problem is using the piano roll to create the drum tracks. I am able to place the hits in the grid but when it plays back, the tempo is MUCH slower then what I have selected. At 140 bpm is seems that it is playing back at half the speed.Anyone have a guess as to what I am doing wrong?

Also, when I view the piano roll, am I supposed to just be viewing the piano on the left side of the screen? I may be wrong but I thought when editing drums I should be viewing a different view or the actual drum names I am using. Though, when I click a piano key a corresponding drum hit does play.

One last question. How do I go about getting changing the beats and divisions in the piano roll?

That's it for now, I hope someone out there can help![sm=tongue.gif]

Thanks!

You may want to try setting the midi channel to 10 on your midi track, in order for it to read your instrument names.

As for your other questions, read up on snap to grid. It will change the resolution of beats in the piano roll view.

Hey, I'm fairly new at this myself and I know nothing about that drum kit but I have noticed that if you had the piano roll view open on a previous track, the piano roll view displays that previous (instrument) track instead of the drum track. You can select multiple tracks or you can close the piano roll view and reopen it with the drum track selected. However in order for you to see the drum instruments on the left side of the view you may need to have that drum kit loaded and/or selected in the out (dropdown) box in your midi drum track first and then open the view. As far as the last question try right clicking the snap to grid in the piano roll view and choose the quantise. I hope this help! Peace!

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't had any luck with them but I will keep trying.

    Anyone else?

Try selecting the track in the track view. Go to Tools, Instruments, and assign to track 10 an appropriate set of note names by clicking to open the folders. Then return to the track view, and with the target track highlighted, go to the piano roll screen.

I know nothing about your timing problem but the last question is easy....you need to make a drum map for your DFH.

    1. Open drum map editor options > drum map manager.
    2. Load the "passthrough" preset
    3. rename the keys into drum names
    4. get rid of the other unused keys by deleting them
    5. save the drum map as "...XXX..."
    5. go to your midi track and change the input to the "...XXX..." map you just made. That should do it.
