Where did you say you got that foam from and for how much? I gotta look into it for my apartment. My mic picks up everything!

Looks good Bob. So when do we get to hear how it sounds?
    attium,
I fought mics for a while, and have a temporary setup that involves suspending sleeping bags and heavy tapestries. It's not nearly as developed as what Bob has done here, but helps immensely. This could offer a low budget sollution in your apartment. It's not pretty, but any port in a storm.
Check out the P45 soundcheck on my Soundclick page. It is raw, no effects, and the mic placement is far from perfect, but liveliness from the room is pretty well contained. I have seen suggestions to set up the vocals in a coat closet, for a really dead space. A setup like Bob's would be great, but sometimes, you just gotta make do.

Great advice Robert. I have some spare stuff I could throw up on the walls. Maybe not sleeping bags but some pretty thick quilts I would never use for anything. Nice guitar playing by the way. I love acoustic. It's so. . . acoustic haha. For lack of a better word.

    ATS acoustics for the 703.
Ebay #230253228904 right now for the foam.

Doc's quick and dirty advise was a mattress. I couldn't concentrate on vocals under it.

    Attium,

I used Foam Factory and Foam N More (links included) for the acoustical foam in my studio. They sell flame ****ant foam category C as required by California law with acoustical absorption factors that are equivalent to the stuff from Auralex.

Here is the down side and why Bob built his gobos a bit differently. The Acoustical absorption properties of foam don't start to become effective until the foam is 2 inches (4.9cm) in thickness or more. And then only in the upper range of frequencies. Really this type of foam is good for sound diffusion (scattering the waves) rather than sound absorption. Basically killing the standing waves that would otherwise skew the mix or create hot spots in the recording environment.

The Ownes-Corning Fiberglass (which Bob used in the gobos) that I would suggest are good for absorbing medium to high frequencies and can be used to kill low end (bass) standing waves when used in corners. You can also use foam traps as a lightweight low cost solution, but they will need to have a depth in excess of 4 inches. For sound proofing it's a lot more difficult, as you will need heavier materials (concrete) in sufficient thickness (6 inches or more) to kill the carryover of bass frequencies. That's what usually sets the neighbors to banging on your door.

The vocal recordings thus far from Bob are much flatter in response and the there is more coloration from the mic. Not bad compared to previous recordings where the top end was emphasized and the vocals sounded quite hollow requiring a large amount of EQ. I think Bob has done an excellent job in building his collapsible vocal booth.

They have had artists there to do live recordings and what not. Since I do live in an apartment, I cant put any spray adhesive or anything on the walls. When we find a home, thats when I will go all out in my music studio but for now this place is very temporary. I noticed, in my opinion, that its my mic is picking up low end volume from my echoes. Not to mention picking up my acoustic guitar that I am playing as well.

For your apartment you can spray the adhesive to the foam only and stick it to the wall. It won't leave any residue and allow you to deaden those standing waves. If you are experiencing the low end boost problem you will want to get some corner traps to put in the room. I put in traps in the corners of my studio along with some wall treatments. The reason I didn't cover everything is I wanted to to still have a somewhat live room.

You can see the bass trap on the left side. I also treated the ceiling. I'm leaving this up for example only.

I looked at the link you provided Attium. It's only a 1/2" deep. Not much good for anything except dispersion and it'll do a poor job at that. Remember 2" or more. The deeper the better.
