Cry of the Behemoth

Hi all:

I recently purchased a Boss Gt-10 and figured I would do a recording with this new unit. While it works like an external audio card, I recorded this one running directly into my M-Audio Fast Track Pro. It is an amazingly quiet unit. I certainly have many hours to go in working on patches. This tune has a guitar backing track, a violin bass line and 3 separate violin solo lines. The remaining tracks are session drummer and Dimension LE synth background.

I haven't had much time to play lately, and I must have had too much fun in my earlier years, because I felt like I was re-learning things again. This became especially apparent when I realized that my Axiom 61 somehow was not registering with Sonar so I had to re-program all the functions again.

Thanks for listening.

    Mornin Nikolas,

I like the percussive picking choice with the sort of synth sounding guitar. The guitar melody is good too. When you bottom out after descending melodic run it gets a tid bit muddy. I think fattening up that guitar synth sound and adding a more delay tail to it would be good too. There's a great Pat Metheny song (forgive me if you already know it) called The Longest summer off of his record Secret Story that has a great example of playing with these type of guitar tones. Good job though.

Oh cool. Sounds lovely on headphones, must check this later on monitors when the neighbours are off to work. I LOVE violin sounds. Excellent contrast with deep soundscape, and good tune too. Not entirely sure about the guitar sounds though, it's a bit too smooth, I find that pretty common with the GT-series, guess that's a COSM thing. Is the GT-10 fully 24/96? (the GT-8 not, AFAIK)

    Nikolas,

I just listened to this again and then noticed you mentioned this is a violin. Thought the gt 10 was for the lead sound at first. comments still apply as resulting sound is almost similar with guitar synth or keyboard.

Absolutely love the sound and playing on this! A little Jean Luc Ponty perhaps?? Gave me chills. I wish I knew how to play violin as well.

Thanks all for the comments. Much appreciated

Roflcopter: The GT-10 is a 24 bit unit. I am really impressed so far coming from Digitech. The user interface is very simple.

rhynosynth: Thanks for the pointers. I definately agree as the solo tones are a tad thin. I am running the violin through the GT-10 as well my Guitar on the arpegiated sections. The only synth sounds are the background water noise, session drummer and a very quiet bass line. The louder bass line is actually my 7 string violin that goes down into the bass and cello range. It is the instrument pictured on my soundclick page.

Outstanding. Love love love love love love the violin!!! like Larry it gave me chills. Really really nice sound on it.

The base was a tad boomy mix wise.

    Great job.

    Nikolas,

Even after my second post. I thought you were playing these lines with a treated violin sample on a keyboard which would still be fantastic. When I went to your site I really didn't scroll down I just clicked the song. (I get straight to the song most of the time) Playing them on violins and even a seven string violin is another animal. That is fantastic. I am truly humbled.

Thanks Foxwolfen. I agree on the bass. The problem I am having is getting the eq to settle with the seven string violin. I'll get it eventually. The range on that instrument is remarkable. It's tuned Bflat, F, C, G, D, A, E low to high. The F is as low as a cello goes and the B flat is in the bass range.

Rhynosynth don't be too humbled - I've got quite some processing going on with the GT-10. Thanks though.

Great playing! Wow! That's an amazing instrument and you play it very well. Well, you played them all, you said, but I'm talking about the violin. But you play them all very well. Nice tune!

    Thanks Chez and Janet.

Much appreciated. Anyone notice the timing off on this piece? I think I need to start using the metranome (sp?..lazy). Lately when I re-listen to some of my recordings I find myself realizing that I have a really bad case of white man's disease.

I couldn't pass up a song with that title. Terrific playing, great tone, and a crystalline mix. Good work.
