How to get the Sub Bass like the Song Put ON

Whatz up Sonar Users!

I was wondering if you can break down to me how do I get the low sustained sub bass that sounds like bass notes are being held down in the Young Jeezy in the song title Put On! I pasted the link to the song just in case you're not familiar with it. It's used a lot in hip hop music. Not sure if its a particular sample, or if I can tweak what I have to get the sustained sub bass, or is there partiuclar VSTi's I need.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hope all of you have a great memorial weekend!!

One trick in getting the bass up is to EQ out the sub-bass below 40Hz. This increases clarity at 60-100Hz, and gets the 'mud' out of your mix. You need to be smart about how you apply this roll-off -- usee a relatively high Q to be precise and set your EQ below that mark, otherwise you'll cut too much above 60hz unintentionally. Use your ears.

I can't find the track anywhere on that page, but sub bass is usually done with a simple sine wave. You can then embellish it with some more high frequency stuff, like a bass guitar. For the sine wave you can use anything at all, from a sampler to a simple single oscillator synth. Some producers also use a TR-808 kick sample and stretch it out, but that is basically still a sine wave.

Thanks for that advice. The main thing I'm confused about is how do you get it to hold so long. It seems like he has a kick hitting. Then there is a sub bass sound that appears to be held down for a few seconds to give it that roaring sound like a Jet? lol Maybe its just a syth being played with keys with the right Preset?

30 hz cut. and side chaining.. you put the kick thru a compressor on the side chain.. so when the kick comes in .. it dips the sub bass. or any sound that you want to have priority over the bass.. it's commonly known as ducking..

it's a straight forward sine bass, normally a kick is about 80 hz area... and the snare is hhmm 140hz ... so you need to keep things clear to make sure the drums punch thru

was pretty much the norm in hardcore and jungle, from 89.. when samplers had next to no memory. Although some even used the sine that was there when you switched on the akai.

It is the first track on that page. "I PUT ON".

OH ok, Sine Wave is what I need to be looking into.

There you go, Larenzo -- you have some expert advice from guys who do this stuff (me, I'm an old timer).

Many things are not what you hear -- you think it's a bass, but 'under the hood' its made from a bass sample, a sine wave sample, maybe a drum sample to go thump, and specific effects. Side chaining is a great technique to learn, especially if you deal with voice over the very loud tracks made today.

Up in the Sonar website's Support section, there's an article on using side chaining techniques (also called ducking) in Sonar, and it's a good one. Check it out!

I guess that is what Mr. Tweak is talking about in the statements I just read on his site as follows.

The typical sub kick is constructed from scratch as follows: A low, short sine wave is put through a fast pitch envelope that rapidly drops the note of the sine wave by an octave or two. This happens so fast you don't really hear the pitch dropping, but an attack followed by a thud. Processing that helps get more lowness is to put a high pass filter (the opposite of what you might think) and set it to around 50-100 HZ and turn the resonance up high. This gives a massive boost right at the cutoff, but leaves enough definition in the upper frequencies to give a sense of a clean attack. It also helps remove some of the sub bass that is not musically useful under 50 Hz, but keeps the sub bass you feel and hear. If its too peaky, cut the resonance, but if it get wimpy when you do that, consider adding compression or limiting.

To get the kind of low sustained kicks that sound like a musical bass note you can put a long release time on the compressor or limiter and push the threshold way down, to the point of abuse. The Waves L1 is perfect for this task. This essentially squashes the volume against the ceiling. The release on the compressor or limiter can make the kick tight or flabby.

    Hello,

Sounds like a synth bass tuned way-way down. I don't hear a sub-bass kick in this track.

Geokauf, nah it's the sine tone.. not just a kick.. how low are your speakers going in hz? normall yit's between say 30hz and 70 hz the kick is probably ducking the sub-bass via a side chain and higher up frequency wise.. pretty standard thing to do for a long time.

+1 for deep sine waves. I used to use those alot. You can rattle the fillings out of your teeth with that stuff.

It's most definitely a synth. If you use S6PE both PSYN II and Pentagon has really great sub-bass presets to start with. If you don't want to use glide (I Put On don't seem to...) there is also a really great preset in the synth Free Alpha ( http://www.linplug.com/Instruments/Alpha_3/alpha_3.htm ).

If you want to spend a couple hundred bucks, you could consider a Minimoog emulator like this :

    http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/products/minimoogv/intro.html

If you want to spend a couple thousand, you can get the real thing:

    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Moog-Little-Phatty-Stage-Edition?sku=700728
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Moog-Minimoog-Voyager-Old-School-Analog-Synth?sku=703148

Minimoog is the ultimate bass synth.

If you want to spend nothing at all you can try these:
    http://antti.smartelectronix.com/
    http://spiritconspiracy.free.fr/spip.php?article14

Off course they are not as good as what AJ_0000 linked to but on a limited budget they are definitely worth a try.
