    Looks awesome Alkie.

The only thing I'd be worrired about is the processing time:

    Name: XLR8
    Your Price: $3,449.95
    Part Number: AP-HUSHXLR8-001
    Processing Time: 7 Business Days

I'd prefer them to get that down to a very, very small fraction of a second

Gotta love humour! Good one Steve.

I'm not sure about the differences in the two systems, but it seems twice as expensive as what Peter Rabbit posted?

the big differance is this is a dual quad machine it has 8 processors to the one he`s going with only has 2 and maximum ram for this machine is 32Gb where 8Gb is max on the 1 he`s going with and cheers steve it takes a brit to think like that LoL.

Nutty, seriously they both look like some very nice kit.

Speaking very much as an amateur who writes/records for fun, my PC is used as a DAW, as opposed to being put together as a DAW. As such, I have to make compromises all the time between family internet PC and recording studio!

    One day though!

Yeah, without a doubt [incidentally, they come from an area of Birmingham just 20-odd miles up the road from me!].

I got into them round about 1977/78 when a friend of my loaned me 'Sad Wings of Destiny' and 'Sin after Sin'. I soon caught up on their back catalogue and got 'Unleashed in the East' and 'British Steel' as soon as they were relesed.

I saw them at the Birmingham Odeon in '82 as the 'Defenders of the Faith' tour was about to get underway and again in 2005 at the NEC during the 'Angel of Retribution' reformation tour.

Me and my old pal SidStrummerUK have been jamming their stuff since those times just for fun - on our Soundclick site, we've got an 80% finished version of BREAKING THE LAW if you'd like to take a listen.

The marketing worries me a bit.
The base model is not what is shown in the benchmark. They indicate that the test was run with a $1,699 option.
The base model ships with XP Pro(32bit) and 4Gb RAM.
True, the 8 core CPU is capable, but by the time you have this thing fully dressed, it weighs in at around $6,000.
My wife would strangle me in my sleep if I dropped that kind of money on a computer.

LOL - I shall inform my great pal SidStrummerUK that his vocals suck!!

Mind you he did record them suffering with a nasty cold while singing into a £1 karaoke machine mic [our condenser was undergoing repairs] in my front room!!!

Caroline is a bit of ancient history [1973] Quo that I've recently revived [Sid and I have been jamming it for well over 25 years] and this was the first 'test' mix to see if the guitars sounded authentic before moving on to a full arrangement.

Metal is good for the soul my friend - at my age, the exercise is good too!

i didn`t say he sucked just not to my liking of a halford vocal track LOL were are stars in our own minds. didn`t know caroline was a QUO song but then i never really listened to them ,when i left scotland at the ripe age of ten in 1976 my influenses became behind the times as in canada it took about 5 years for the top british stuff to get here and i can say around 13 is when i got into JP, Iron Maiden,Samson & OZZY.

Samson vocalist 'Bruce Bruce' left the band to front Iron Maiden [after Paul Di'Anno left] under his real name - Bruce Dickinson.

Sadly, to reveal my age, I saw both Samson and Iron Maiden at the 1980 Reading Festival!

Feels more like the 1908 Reading Festival now though

You started this thread with specs of a computer that has a lot of power installed. The only problem, most of that power would be wasted, un-used. Most daw programs are not built to optimise dual core, or more that 2 gig of ram. I'm sure that it would help in a situation where you were using multiple synths, and maybe you could have two or three sessions open at once, but for most users, why pay for a cadillac when a chevy would do the job, the insurance costs less, the spare parts are cheaper, and the mechanic charges less per hour?

Built for Extreme Digital Audio Production: The most powerfull audio optimized computer system to date. Record in real time at 32 buffers. Run more plug-ins and VST instruments than ever before. Very high performance and EXTREME low latency: 15% CPU utilization, no clicks or pops @ 32 buffers / .7 ms latency / 44.1K / 24 bit audio, when running the THONEX audio benchmark. Test performed using Cubase 4 and RME's Fireface 800. Capable of addressing up to 32 GB of high speed memory.
well GAMBLERSCHOICE i think a 3 year warranty helps on the parts and labour costs, and as i`ve seen over my years people who settle for the CHEVY always wish they had the CADILLAC.

True, the caddie would be better, but the chevy is all I can afford. In fact, I need to get one used, with 75,000 miles on it. Funny, then you start dumping money into it to make up for the short falls, fixing things, stuff like that. Maybe the bigger initial investment would have been a better idea. I hate being poor.
Really, wasn't trying to 'dis your research, just kinda thinking out loud. But, as an aside, I thought some of these programs, xp included, could only handle 2 gig of memory, and the rest would be wasted. I am not a computer wizard, maybe you could help me out here, sorta educate me.

as i`ve been told and as i understand RAM, is that it is never wasted yes it may only show up as 3.25Gb when you put 4Gb in but that`s because the operating system reserves the missing .75Gb for itself. A computer geek friend of mine said that a computer will use as much as it needs and if it is in there it will use it . he told me that just because it doesn`t list things doesn`t mean their not there and don`t get used , for instance look in add and remove programs pick any of your programs the MB`s are not the same as the size of the actual program and i`ll bet you have programs in your computer that aren`t even listed in add & remove programs. i think the real problem is if you have a lot of ram it can get bogged down because it stores all the dll`s for future use. that`s why 1 of the tweaks for a DAW is to put in a rule to always unload DLL`s anyway i`m ramblin on too much ,also gamblerschoice i don`t feel your dissin my research we all have our say in things whether were right or wrong that`s how we learn.

Sorry for the late post. I periodically check into the forum but not everyday unless I'm expecting a response to a post or just kicking back.

That does appear to be quite a machine. However, as mentioned, it's over twice the price I paid for mine. (Yup, I already ordered it and it's being built at this very moment.)

The company I went with was ADK. I could have upgraded to a more powerful unit with them also but of course the price continues to increase with each upgrade. The model of system I bought from them is really for home recording entusiasts which is exactly what I am. But they do have other models available that range from about $1,200 to over $6,000 depending on what you want to put into the unit.

I was trying to work within a budget and obtain a machine that could easily accomodate the workload that I'd be putting on it as an amatueur- shmuck-one man band kinda guy who can only record one instrument at a time anyway.

I'm sure I'll be very happy with the machine I've purchased. But I suppose if price were not part of the equation I'd go for the biggest and fastest one available even if I didn't really need all that power.

Thanks for the post though. It never hurts to keep an eye on what's out there and it's also fun to dream.

    Pete
