Guitarists - Compare Software Please

Has anyone out there tried Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3?
If so, how does it compare to Studio Devil?
Or how about Native Instruments Guitar Combo? (Plexi, Twang, and A.C. Box)
I'd really appreciate your opinions.
Thanks.

If you're considering GR then don't even waste your time on Studio Devil.
Studio Devil is a simple amp sim not much better than what come sin 7PE IMO.
Since you're a guitar player go with GR, Amplitiube2, or Amplitube Jimi Hendrix.

    Hi Thomas
I'm not a guitarist, although I do own guitar rig (as part of komplete) , and BOTH got really good reviews in my usual read (computer music)

the price is a big difference also £45 vs £150 ?

I'm guessing that had a big influence on the review also. The studio devil thing isn't available at my usual pro-audio shop, but it would be great to demo the 2 to find out which suits your needs best. I have seen lots of mentions of guitar rig on here also. So hopefully someone more informed who makes more use out of it than me can comment. Do you need the foot pedal also, say for live work?

I posted in the Software forum about an interesting read in June issue of Keyboard about the Waves GR3.

I use Guitar Rig 3 and Line 6. Both are very good by me. Hard to compare them all since I don't have them all.
With Ed's post and these 3 I'd say they are all major players right now. There may be others I'm not aware of.

Guitar Rig 3 I use as a plugin. The Line 6 is standalone and I pipe into Sonar. Both have been worth the investment to me.
Now it would be hard for me to choose one over the other. No latency issues with the Line 6 - can have to "work" the latency issues with the Guitar Rig 3 as a plug-in.

After the read about the Waves GR3 I see it coming.

I dunno, I downloaded the Studio Devil 'British' free version, and to my ears it sounds as good as anything! If the rest of the models are of the same quality, then I'm impressed! And I own Line6 GearBox VST and GR2!

I have GR3 (and Guitar Combo), but I prefer ReValver by far. They just came out with a new version MK III, which is now owned by Peavey. I currently use the prior version MK II, haven't tried the new version yet, but plan to.

It's worth trying out some of the user created amp presets and speaker impulses for ReValver.

GR is in a different class with studio dev. GR is more intensive with more options than studio devil. SD is like an amp sim plug and GR is a complete guitar modelling program

Just an FYI... the Line6 Gearbox gold bundle is going for $99 w/ free shipping at a few sites now (Sweetwater being one I know). Reviews are mixed as with all software sims but it also has some vocal preamp models and bass stuff too. hard to imagine you can go too wrong for $99...

I have Guitar Combos and I had Guitar Rig when it first came out.

I like Guitar Combos better. I will explain.

1- I am more of a plug and play kind of guy. I don't use many pedals and I don't even really like that many different amps. I like Fender, Vox, Marshall and Soldano amps mostly.

For me, Combos just is easier to use if you work that way because you don't get all the options that GR3 gives you.

I can also tell you that I find hitting a nice tube pre (I like the UA 610) going into these makes a big difference.

I can also tell you that I recently started micing my amps again (I own the above that I said I liked) and it's actually a lot simpler for me then fooling with the software - I do a DI of the track in case I want to use one of the plugs later when I mix.

If you like a lot of effects go with GR3. If you play with less of that stuff GC will probably do the job. Just depends what sounds you look for.

+1 for guitar rig (I have software only version). Also have guitar combos, which appears to me to be a lesser version of GR with fewer presets, a less flexible noise gate and far fewer options. Also have Amplitube Live 2 which is really good as well, but still pales next to GR. I'm a plug and play guy too and GR gets it done for me. Good luck!

This has got to be one of the most personal decisions! I use a Line 6 Tone Port UX2 and also a V2.0 "Kidney" and love them. Tone is very personal and also requires the right guitar etc... Best of luck. Just remember when I was in my 20's these weren't even an option and great tone was a multi $$$ challenge. One Matchless 12" amp was a $1500 investment and you only got the one sound! Cheers!

I recently attended the (IK)StompIO tour where three bands played their sets thru the units and I was pretty impressed with the tone(s). Both the guitarists and the bassists played thru the units. I currently use three of the IK guitar plugs(Amp2, JH and SVX) and X-Gear ties them all together quite nicely.

I have GR3, Combos and AmpliTube 2 and Metal here.

GR has the best effects for the most part. The matched cabinets are great, and the low gain amp simulations are good out of the box. The high gain ones aren't as convincing, but by playing around with the expert mode in the amps (turn the bias, sag and variac down while turning the sensitivity up), they become better. The lower gain ones with one of the distortion options in front work admirably, though

The IK stuff has mix and match preamps, EQs and power amps. The power amps are where IK shines- the 50 watt EL34's absolutely wonderful, for example. But, with the exception of the pitch effects, the effects aren't in GR's league. IK's pitch effects walk all over GR's though.

I'm trying the ReValver III demo right now- it's got a lot of cool features, such as being able to select your tubes, your type of circuit (for example, single ended vs push-pull for power tubes) and being able to adjust tube parameters. It has lousy built in effects, but it has a VST host module where you can use your third party effects in your rig.

The best advice? Try the demos...
