Song: Blue Silhouettes

http://www.sonicmusic.net/Blue_Silhouettes.mp3

There was no set meter and no click track for the piano which was recorded ad-lib, so some of the backing tracks were not as 'tight' as I would have preferred.
Hey,that's what I get for playing with myself without a metronone.(leaving myself wide open for rude remarks)

He-He-He!! Well, I happen to like un-perfect timing so.......kinda sounds new-agey, pro-rock blend. Emerson-Lake & Palmer vibe for sure. Very nice. Excellent choice of sounds and playing! I think ya done good... No mix crits.

Yes, I agree with Larry. I find now that songs that are flawless seem a bit artificial (but that may just because mine are so flawed I am overcompensating ).

Great job on this song. Sounds great. I like the synth patch

Hey poly, I like this song no comments from this rookie on mixing but I love the sonic textures. I like I'm falling down too. Mike, Tony and Phil would be proud. Good job putting all this together. You'd never no it by listening to the song I posted and the couple I have comin but prog rock is my real passion. Back in the late seventies and early eighties I hammered all the greats into my head from Genesis,Rush,Floyd,Yes, ELP etc. Do you use any hardware synths? Fantastic stuff.

Poly, love these textures. Timing sound fine to me, didn't hear anything that didn't seem right. Very nice mood. Thanks for sharing.

The synth patch is a freebie Minimoog plugin. Sounds pretty close to my real one which I was too lazy to turn on

Hey Rhyno...thanks for the kind words!!!
Yea, I'm still a progger myself, although I love to dabble in just about every style imaginable. Great stuff back then....still some good stuff out there now too!
And yes, I still use my hardware synths:

    Moog Sonic 6
    Prophet 5

Yea, the timing seems to actually make it sound more like a band and not one guy I've been trying to do that for years. I guess the secret is to not use a metronome!

Would you mind directing me to that mini-moog patch? I have nothing like that in my collection and am always looking for more sounds.

Hey Poly, another fantastic track! Really well done.

One thing keeps buggin' me and it could be because I'm listening with cans but the stick on the ride cymbal sounds like a digital 'click'... unintentional and distracting. Is it just me?

    Hey Toby.....long time no see

    Thanks for the kind words.
    On that stick/ride thing.
The samples are DFHSuperior so I don't think that was the problemThere is a Marimba sample that is also hitting at the same time.
    I think that's what's happening.
I could have eased back on both of them.

    Cheers!

Lots of great sounds going on here. Wow! I didn't hear the timing issues. I've thought about playing without a metronome but can't figure out how to add drums, etc. after the fact without creating an editing nightmare. So I'm curious how you did this. Anyway, great song!

I basically got as close as I could with all the parts, then just tightened up anything that really stuck out. I used the piano roll view to view all the parts I needed to edit, and moved things around a little bit. It didn't take as long as I expected it to. Probably because I'm used to my own phrasing

    Poly,
Great stuff. Really like the tempo changes between the quieter parts and the busier parts. Great depth and clarity in the mix. The mix has that quality where the different instruments have a different sort of 'shape' to me .. getting abstract visuals off this I suppose . Nice volume swelled guitar lines, very evocative. Cool moog lines and excellent blend of progressive styles .. fusiony, progressive, very expressive yet with an artistic sense of restraint and maturity. Very Allan Holdsworth meets Chick Corea kind of stuff (which I mean as a huge complement). Nice work, really enjoyed that.

    Thanks Bill!
    Holdsworth....Corea.
Those two words just hit my hot button
I think I've seen Chick live more than any other act....going back to the RTF days with Bill Connors on guitar.
Some of my favorite Holdsworth stuff was way back when he was with Tony Williams Lifetime. The solo in "Red Alert" was just stunning.
