Video editing software recommendations

I want to make some music videos to go with some music I'm doing with Sonar.

I've paid top dollar for Sonar PE, but don't want to spend top dollar on video software.

Also, I'm PC based and can't afford another box, especially a MAC.

1. low cost +-$100 or even free open source
2. Easy to use
3. 5.1 sound would be a plus but not required
4. deliver to DVD & Web - HD would be a plus.
5. stable stable stable

What PC software do you recommend and why?

Top dollar software would be something like Adobe Premiere Pro. Take a look at Adobe Premiere Elements. It seems to fit what you are describing. Some people like Movie Edit Pro 14 PLUS from www.magix.com. They have a free trial you can download to see if it does what you want.

free: (XP)Windows Movie Maker (I believe the Vista Version has even more possibilites at least another free tool to burn AVI to DVD)
low cost: Pinnacle Studio 12 (plus).. the "studio" version sometimes is bundled to some dvd-burners, graphiccards.. I think I have vers. 9 or 10 and it's ok to do small projects.
    both are easy to use..

"stable", well.. Movie Maker as sometimes issues, can't speak for Pinnacle Studio as I haven't used it recently

Good luck. A couple of years ago I decided to get into some entry level video editing software just to do home movies and such. What a nightmare. All I wanted was something cheap and easy to use. I bought probably 4 or 5 programs and didn't like any of them. They were either too simple with not enough features or too complicated. Most of them didn't work that well (hang-ups, freezes, glitches, audio sync problems, graphics not working right, etc). If I had to pick one, I guess I would pick Sony Vegas (some low end version I bought at Best Buy). It seemed the most stable. But it was also the more complicated of the bunch. I have a copy of that Magix program (came bundled with Samplitude Pro) but I couldn't even get that installed and the use doc's are terrible. Which is sort of a problem with any of them. Sony was probably the best in this regard (at least you got a hard copy book and mine came bundled with a nice audio FX sample library).

Again - good luck. I suggest Vegas.

How does its compare to Discreet's Inferno?

Movie Maker comes free with windows. It's a great start to simple cut editing. You get to learn to count and all that stuff.

    Hello,

I can't say enough good about Sony Vegas Studio. You can download a fully working demo. (Note: image your system disk before installing new software). I worked professionally many years ago on Premiere on a Media 100 system. Vegas is a easy as video editing is going to get in that nearly all the common things that you do are a single letter key or drag function. Vegas studio is nearly function for function the identical product to the full Vegas Pro except Studio is limited to only 4 tracks of video and only 4 tracks of audio and also doesn't have Vegas Pro's cool snapping features. I use Vegas Pro and the most I've ever done was 2 tracks of video and 3 tracks of audio so I haven't exceeded Vegas Studio's capability anyway. So it is not likely that you would exceed the capability of Vegas Studio.

While having worked in an app like Sonar should help you get up and running with an app like Vegas, I strongly recommend that you rent at least volume I of "Vegas Video Editing" by Gary Kleiner (available at http://smartflix.com/store/video/2478/Vegas-Video-Editing) to really get up and running. (Note: although this video deals with Version 4 and Sony is on Version 8, there are very few new functions in the current version that are not covered.

I don't know. I don't think I've heard of Inferno before. That could mean that it's new or way out of my price range.

I have Adobe Premier Pro, but after watching Ethan Winer's demonstration of Sony Vegas (on his Tele-Video DVD, highly recommended) it looks like Vegas is the way to go. I felt like I could sit right down with it and go to town. This hurts me to say, too, because I despise Sony and refuse to give them any money - it's one reason I use Adobe Audition instead of Sony Soundforge. But Vegas appears to be a very good product indeed.

Of course Vegas is pricey, around $850, I think. But there is a "lite" product called Sony Vegas Movie Studio that's around $130.

I also use an inexpensive application called Adobe Aftereffects, which is actually a video sequencer, but it would probably serve your purpose and it's very easy to use.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Eh?

Aftereffects is 1500 euros IIRC - more like a Special FX addon for Premiere Pro, no?

Looks like Vegas is on top.

Does the included DVD Architect include the functionality of CD Architect, which I've read so much about on the Sonar forum?

I have Vegas Movie Studio + DVD Platinum package. I don't remember what I paid for it but I don't think it was $130. I think I paid around a hundred bucks or something like that at Best Buy. But this was a year or two ago. It might have gone up since then.

I didn't understand it at first but it's actually two separate programs that come bundled on a single disc. You get two separate serial numbers/activation codes. Basically you do all your video editing in Movie Studio and then use DVD architect to create the DVD.

It's not CD Architect. It's a DVD authoring program (OK maybe sort of like CD Architect except only for DVD's).

Why they chose to do this in two separate programs didn't make sense to me at first. Other programs come as a complete package. Don't know why Sony couldn't do the same thing. You know, Sony took a lot of this from the original Sonic Foundry company so maybe it's just a piecemeal of various Sonic Foundry products.

If you think DAW software is weird at times, you haven't seen anything until you start investigating and using video editing/authoring software.

I went for Adobe Premiere Elements bundled with Photoshop Elements. It was only 150 euros or so. Very stable, has everything you need I think. It's a real combo, you can freeze a frame in Premiere, that gets sent to Photoshop, you edit it there, and it gets put back into Premiere. Can be a real handy feature, and Photoshop Elements is still quite a powerful tool in its own right.

+1 - I have used Ulead's Media Studio Pro and had very good luck with it. I had no stability issues. Their lower end product is called Video Studio and it is fine but not as many features.

    Take care,

I know you're not wanting to spend the money but this sure solves many issues. With the MP3 license added it's a full meal deal. I'd bet any free offer from them would be pretty good.

    Vegas Pro 8 + DVD

Very good stuff and just last week they released free update to 4.5 for Blue-ray burning (DVD Architect Pro 5)

Vegas Pro is is still at 8.
The "consumer" version just went up to 9 and a review says the UI is now very similar to the pro line, but you don't have all the functionality. Main difference being 4 tracks (of as many clips as you want) versus unlimited, plus other stuff.

Point being the non pro version is street price at $50, 70 and 99 dollars with various bundle differences, the latter includes a "free" 2Gig thumb drive.
