How to set up the virus_z3ta+ mod

The virus_z3ta+ mod is a very nice set of alternative sounds for the z3ta+. Unfortunately, the instructions for setting it up supplied by the designers don't work for Cakewalk Sonar owners running the latest version (1.5.3) of z3ta+. With thanks to Rene and B-Rock, here are a set of instructions that will do the job.

The key is that z3ta+ looks first for its startup files in the folder where the z3ta+.dll is located. So you want to make sure that ALL the startup files are in that folder, for every differentiated instance of z3ta+ that you have.

Here's how:

1) Cut and paste the following files into your z3ta+ folder in your VST plugins folder:
C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\z3ta+\Arpeggios\
C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\z3ta+\Documentation\
C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\z3ta+\Resources\
C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\z3ta+\Tunings\
C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\z3ta+\Wavetables

2) Do the same with these files:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\z3ta+\MIDI Arpeggios\
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\z3ta+\MIDI Learn\
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\z3ta+\Programs\

3) Make of a copy of your z3ta+ folder in your vst plugins folder and rename it virus_z3ta+.

4) go into the new folder and rename the z3ta+ .dll files there to start with "virus_", e.g. virus_z3ta+.dll.

5) now open the zipped files that came with your virus_mod2 package and copy them into the corresponding subfolders (Wavetables, Arpeggios, etc.) in the virus_z3ta+ folder. Replace anything with the same name in the target folder. Copy the skin of your choice into the "Resources" folder (there is no Skin folder, no matter what the virus_mod documentation says). I recommend the Red skin so you can easily tell whether you're using z3ta+ or the virus version.

6) Start up Sonar and let it scan the VST plugins folder. Then check to make sure everything is working. If you did this right, the two versions of z3ta+ should come up with different names, different skins, different presets, and different wavetables.

You can repeat this procedure from step 3) on whenever you want to set up a new z3ta+ instance with a different name and different wavetables/presets for automatic load at startup of the VSTi.

Regards, lightninrick

Thanks Lightning, I was just about to install the Virus Mod and the Orgone 7 skin. Apparently it requires some folder restructering. I haven't been able to find the skins folder in Z3TA+ resources 1.5.3. There are a lot of skin shots there but none I'd use. I take it from your post you copy and paste them into the other resource folder. But how do you put them on the synth?

You don't. When Z3ta+ starts, it simply loads files with specific names from the Resources folder. Just make sure that the skin files you want Z3ta+ to use have the default names.

    2) Do the same with these files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\z3ta+\MIDI Arpeggios\

    nice one lightninrick

for vista users the "C:\Documents and Settings" part will become "c:\program data" which is hidden, unless you tell vista to unhide files. I'm not 100% as I'm not in front of my DAW.

    thanks lightninrick

as I said in another post, I don't have access to my DAW in these days, but I plan to update the install instructions as soon as possible
