ALLAN'S RESOLVE

ALLAN'S RESOLVE

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=2302&alid=-1

stream and download available.

this is a rock instrumental, heavy melodic style...

this song, was inspired by allan holdsworth.
i've always been a fan, but known that the poor guy has starved a lot!
LOL
his decisions to remain true to his artistic vision, despite hard times and marketing pressures, is pretty cool to me.
anyway, i just had this riff that sounded somewhat bittersweet, and i developed it into an arrangment....

Brent Dacus (DWF area) offered to provide drum tracks, so we back and forthed, and here's the end result.

originally mixed on a VS1880, i'm about to dump these tracks into SONAR, and give it a new go..
ideas on mix changes?

Mix sounds great! Nice, tasty guitar work in here. My favorite parts are the breakup at 1:26, and where the percussion comes in at about 2:03. The last part of the tune, beginning at around 3:17 is killer. I found the first part of the song to be a bit "longish", but not much. Nice job on this!

batsbrew, I remember this tune when you posted it a while back... really good stuff. Listening to the download MP3. My only criticism is that a couple of the crashes (but not all) sound a little crispy to my ears, particularly the one center-left. Perhaps just a minor level adjustment is all that's needed (if you have control over it). The rest of the cymbals and hihats are pretty clean.

Nice guitar work. I second Darin on the breakup 1:26 & 2:03. I really like the lick at 3:17 and everything after that. Seems like the song kicks in after that point. So my only nit would be to have this kick-in part start sooner.

Nice composition and tell Brent Dacus nice job on the drums.

Hey, that was really cool. I had it cranked up in the Windows Media Player and your guitar playing really had the visual effects going wild. You really made your axe 'sing' in this mix.

Hope to hear more - cheers.

    thanks for listening.
    glad you dig those sections.......
you know, it's hard to beat the 'longish' rap... and still develop the melody the way i wanted...
actually, i originally had it much longer than it is.......!
    LOL
but i edited it down, for that very reason.

    Clean-
    thanks.

yes, i posted a long while back.... and now that i've got the chance, to revisit this mix, i think the sonar mix bus is going to sound much 'clearer' than the vs mix bus....
at least, that's what i intend to find out.
i'll have to recreate the mix from scratch, so i'm guessing i'm not even going to look at the old mix... but simply just try a 'better' mix..
the crashes, might be dealt with easily now, because i have more powerful tools to compress and eq properly...
i'll focus on that, with the drum mix..

    musiccontinuum-
    'kick-in part sooner'..... gotcha.
and i'll tell brent what you said. thanks!

    Mamabear
thanks! i appreciate your time to check it out....

ha! i've got a taylor 414! in fact, it's on it's way back home, from the Taylor factory in CA, after being tweaked in response to some flood damage i incurred while on vacation.
visual effects work well with this tune.. i don't know why, but whenever i happen to play this thing thru the media player, it always trips me out!!
and don't worry, there's lots more to come...

tdye-thanks a lot for checking it out... glad you liked it.

    Gonzo,

I haven't played the 414 - deeper tone than mine I think due to the ovangkol back and sides. I hope the flood damage isn't too bad - I would shed tears (seriously) if something happened to mine.

Yeah, the visual effects were wild on your song.

    Cheers,
    Doug

It's always a treat for me when you post here.

This is no exception, although I don't think Allan Holdsworth, would figure on any top 100 list of mine for deserving causes...

That said I guess ya gotta dedicate a tune to something.

Well worth the download, top notch.

thanks so much to everyone for listening..

i'm getting my taylor back today, from the taylor factory...
after the flooding of my lower level, and the taylor getting wet, it's coming back to me better than it was before...
fresh fret re-dressing, the ends have been snipped (due to shrinkage in the dry utah desert air), re-set neck, re-glued pickguard, all set up factory fresh! i'm looking forward to recording with it...

    darinBad-
yep, i've been writing and recording instrumentals like this steady since about 1982....
    so, quite the backlog!
some of them are a riot tho, and a select few are worth digging out.... to re-do. i just might.

    Jonbouy
    top 100 list, eh......?!
    LOL
    yeah, i hear you...
there is a specific line during one of the melody/solo sections, that was a direct lift from UK-In the Dead of Night.....
i twisted it a bit, but it was a holdsworth lift... so, maybe i should send him some of the royalties i'm raking in on this song.....?
    :D

i'll try that out when i get the wav files into sonar, and start re-building the drum tracks into a sub mix...
