Sonar 6 MIDI problem

(Newbie) When I try Tutorial 2, there is more than one choice for MIDI, which one do I use, and also, when I hit a note on my keyboard, it takes 5 or 6 seconds for that note to clear before I can hear another. This does not allow me to enter notes into the program. HELP.

    what are the choices?

as far as the delay, that's called latency. you didn't list your comptuer specs or your sound card, so I'm just going to guess here based on the fact that you are a newbie that you're using your computer's onboard soundcard. if that's the case you will not get low latency out of it for recording MIDI using softsynths (or low latency audio for that matter).

you can try to improve your latency by moving the latency slider to the FAST side here:
    OPTIONS>AUDIO>GENERAL
but that will likely start causing popping and stuttering and even dropout.

to resolve it you need a 'prosumer' quality soundcard. check my website for recommendations.

Thanks Beagle. Moved the slider to FAST. Have not tried yet. The choices for Template are: 1) 16 Track MIDI, 2) General MIDI Authoring, 3) General MIDI Authoring-Virthal Synth, 4) MIDI only

Select the "MIDI Only" template. Proceed to next step in tutorial.

[The EDIT]: We really need more info about your computer...OS, CPU, RAM capacity, soundcard model, etc.,...

    ORIGINAL: songbird

    1) Still don't know what type of computer (laptop, desktop, make/model, etc.,)...

    2) What does "MIDI connected by USB" mean? You have a USB MIDI keyboard?

    3) Still don't know what soundcard you're using (although I suspect it's an onboard chipset such as Realtek)...

    4) Your computer just barely meets Cakewalk's "Minimum" System Requirements. You're probably going to have a difficult time getting any decent performance unless you upgrade your RAM to at least 1GB (or add 1GB as I suspect your 512MB is actually two 256MB sticks and you may need to install memory in matched pairs).

To find out how your motherboard is configured for RAM go to the Crucial Technologies website and have your system scanned. This will tell you the type of RAM configuration you currently have and what you can do to upgrade. I'm not saying you should buy from Crucial--although I have--I'm merely suggesting you use their online scan to determine your needs.

RAM is inexpensive. So are external Hard Drives...Your 80GB native drive is going to be stressed out BIG time running SONAR...Suggest you look into adding another drive (200GB or more) to use exclusively for your Project/Audio files.

The performance you get from SONAR will only be as good as what your computer system can handle. Right now, your system won't handle much.

To all who took the time and effort to help, Thank You. I finally isolated the problem. I was using a Yamaha YPT-210 keyboard during the problem. I hooked up a Kurzweil PC88, and there was no problem. I cannot find the correct function setting to eliminate the delay. If any of you have experienced this, please let me know what to do. Again, thanks. I hope I can learn enough to be of help to someone one day.

Finally, with Yamaha's excellent and patient help, it was determined that the MIDI interface I had was not compatible with my keyboard. After ordering the recommended interface, all is well. Hope this is helpful to someone else.
