Presonus Firepod 10x10
Anyone here using the Presonus Firepod 10x10 in conjunction with Music Creator 4? If so, how do you like it? I'm thinking about buying one in the next few weeks and wanted to see what everyones opinion was before I drop a nice chunk of change on it. My goal is to get 8 independent tracks digitaly into Music Creator 4 so I can play with the levels and manipulate each of the 8 tracks seperately. Thanks, - Ray

If I understood what you said..... MC4 only lets you do 2 inputs at a time...so the firepod will not be able to help you.... You should consider the upgrade to Sonar where you will be able to use (at the same time) all of the firepods inputs. If you are not interested in recording 8 inputs AT THE SAME TIME... other interfaces will do that ..probably cheaper, and once you get the tracks in to MC4...you can work with and control ALL the tracks at the same time....as in mix down, automation.

If you only need two inputs, then consider the PreSonus Firebox. That's what I have and it runs fine wiith MC 4. The only problems I've had is me. Another way of saying it is, there is a bit of a learning curve as it is all new to me (both MC 4 and Firebox). The Firebox is great as far as I'm concerned. Plus it is based on firewire which is better and faster than USB, which I think is a bonus. If you have any specific questions, let me know. Nutty

yeah, if you need to record 8 SIMULTANEOUS tracks then you'll have to upgrade to SHS6 or SHS6XL because MC won't allow more than 2.

Music Creator only lets you record 2 devices at once, WWWhhhhhhhhaaaaat! Hmmmmm that's surprising. (Really glad I posted this before purchasing the software) Guess I'm off to find a good software program to run with this Presonus firepod 10x10...... So how about Sonar 6 and the Presonus firepod 10x10? Anyone using that? Just want to get everything right before I purchase everything. Thanks, - Ray

I don't have either one. I have Sonar 6PE, SHS6's big brother and it's very similar to SHS6, but SHS6 is a little more limited than Sonar 6. SHS6 and SHS6XL are excellent packages for the price. I'd recommend the SHS6XL if you can afford the extra bit. it comes with some really decent softsynths and a limiter which is supposed to be really good. I don't have the firepod and haven't ever used one, tho. maybe post on the gear forum and see if anyone there has any problems with it.

Ray, the question really is, why are you wanting to have 8 tracks at the same time, youir post seemed a bit fuzzy, You said My goal is to get 8 independent tracks digitaly into Music Creator 4 so I can play with the levels and manipulate each of the 8 tracks seperately. are you recording all 8 at one time as in you have a band? Or are you wanting to have each instrument on a separate track and you are recording them one at a time? This is the big question, because MC4 will record more than 2, just not at the same time, you can record up to 48 in MC4. Then you can mix them as you want. If you are recording a band get SHS6xl and a firepod, If just you playing separate tracks MC4 and a firebox will do a great job. Even better than that on a desk top get a M-Audio 24/96 card and a behringer 802 xenyz mixer and you can record and mix till the cowns come home with very little issues.

We are recording as a 4/5 piece band, so 8 at a time is a must. Then we can go back and add more as needed. Thanks guys.

That answers yours and our questions. You need at least SHS6 this way you can setup and hit them all at one time. The firepod is a good choice as it allows you to daisy chain two for more inputs later. As some said before Get SHS6XL if possible for the better plugins, but at the least SHS6

46+2.... Why don't you just call yourself 48? nevermind... I'm glad someone had the foresight to ask questions before buying..... most buy, then ask questions...after the fact. Good for you. Have fun recording.

48, what fun would that be........... I will take a look at SHS6 and SHS6XL (even though I have no idea what those are.... assuming Sonar 6 maybe.....) I'll search around and see what looks good. Thanks again guys for your help. This will be a HUGE improvement over our little Fostex MKii 8 track recorder that does 16bit/44.1k recordings and with only 2 inputs at time. - Ray

And make sure you have a DVD reader. All these programs are on DVD, not CD.

Hey Beagle, How does Sonar 6 Studio Edition compare to the regular Sonar 6 and Sonar 6 XL? Does it come with everything the XL has? Thanks, - Ray

Studio edition does not come with the same plugins as SHS6XL. I THINK it has the same funcationality as the full blown sonar PE edition, but without the plugins that Sonar PE has. SHSXL will have different plugins than Sonar SE, but Sonar SE will have more functionality than SHS. such as there is a track limitation in SHS - you'll probably never reach it, - I think it's limited to 64 audio tracks, but it's there. also Sonar SE has PER TRACK EQ which everyone seems to love and I don't think SHS has it. SE has AUDIOSNAP which SHS does not have. that's a big difference. Sonar 8 SE and SHS7XL have just been announced - you can't buy Sonar 7 SE or SHS6XL right now from cakewalk, you can pre-order with delivery promised in early October, but if you want the older 7/6 versions you'll have to get it from someplace who has inventory like guitar center. however, the S8SE and SHS7XL are supposed to have major improvements to the audio engine making it more efficient and less stress on the CPU - so I'd def get SHS7XL or Sonar 8 SE instead of the 6/7 versions!

Beagle, I appreciate the upsell, and in the future, if I like the program I will most likely upgrade, However with my budget, i'm going to start out with Sonar 6. So my next question (cause I can't find any comparison on this site) is, Which one would would you recommend from these two choices? Sonar 6 Home Studio, or Sonar 6 Studio Edition? I have found new copies of both for around $50. Also, is there any kind of trial downloads for either? Thanks, - Ray

Ray, There's a downloadable demo of Sonar 7 right now and Sonar 8 is being shipped staring this week. if you're finding copies of SHS6 and Sonar 6 for $50 I would be VERY suspicious that those are not valid NEW unlicensed copies. Sonar doesn't allow cut pricing on their products (unless they've changed their policy). and if you get a copy which has already been registered, they will NOT transfer the license to you and you will not get support nor are you eligible for upgrades. I would suggest you call cakewalk and verify these deals with them before buying them. make sure that cake says it's OK for that company to sell their product at that price. otherwise you might get burned. SHS7, SHS7XL and Sonar 8SE would be the products you'd be looking at. there's not a direct comparison chart anywhere with those products. I really wish cake would make a correct one. one of the other forum members has been making them lately, but he's not updated anything for the newest versions yet. the biggest difference between S8SE and SHS7 would be that S8SE has audiosnap. this is a function which allows you to correct timing on audio tracks. SHS7XL does not have audiosnap, so if that's important to you, then go for it, but if audiosnap is not important to you, then SHS7XL would be the best money for the value, IMO. I have the PRODUCER Edition myself, but I wanted audiosnap and the plugins that came with PE.

Just pointing out that you didn't answer my question at all. I wasn't asking about the latest versions and while I appreciate your insight and knowledge of the newer versions, I wanted to know about SONAR 6 Home Studio vs. SONAR 6 Studio Edition. Sonar 6 Studio Edition will be here on Tuesday, I'm looking forward to working with it. Thanks again Beagle, I didn't mean to insult you, just joking around. - Ray
