I Am A Clown (Opinions)

Written in a pub on a piano around 2000, was clowning around, liked the tune.

Recorded in 2007 for something to do. Added a bit of this and that but not too much to spoil it, well, I don't think I spoilt it.

Over the years I have recorded this song about 6 times and everytime it came out different. Mainly without drums and this is the only version I recorded with guitar on. Used to be just Organ and Violin but I thought that the guitar pepped it up a bit.

Let me know what you think.

    Mr Clean,

Definitely hear "The Beatles" around Sgt. Pepper days in this one. I really enjoyed it (because I'm a big Beatles fan). One thing I would like to ask it to spread out the mix. It just feels to narrow.

I'd like to hear some harmonies in the chorus just to change up the song and let everyone know when you've entered the chorus.

    Again, very cool tune.

Nice song. I hear a variety of influences. I like the vox and the slightly circus sound to the song. Very creative.

The only crit is the song seems a bit thin in sound overall. It needs a bit more oomph in the bottom I think.

Cheers for the comments folks. Appreciated. I admit that the mix is a bit all on one level and lacks depth and what not but in my defence it was recorded and mix when I didn't really know what I was doing with Sonar and had no knowledge what-so-ever to do with mastering so hopefully with the knowledge I have now gained from the experienced muso's on here I can produce better sounding mix's.

Sadly the master's of this were lost forever along with a lot of other work so re-mixing and mastering is out of the question but a re-recording could be on the cards as I like the song a lot.

Thanx for taking the time to listen.

Good song with good lyrics.. Well, you're stuck with the mix ( I have a few of those tunes myself) You may be able to make it a bit 'warmer' sounding on the stereo wav tho'..... but just a tad. This has a Beatlesque vibe to it like Mr. Kite. I enjoyed this!

    Thanks for supplying the lyrics.

Well compressed for most of the vox ... Like Supertramp and British frolic ... take me to the circus of rock ...

Thanks Mr. C for that reminiscent piece of circus romance. Simple hook repeats gracefully.

Possibly your song might be condensed into a shorter (pop) version ... possibly with more dynamic drums and bass ... (of course I'm listening on my laptop so I may be wrong).

Fun little tune with retro-vibes. I do like the guitar and it does pepp up the song.

Mr. Clean - this is a fun little song, even tho your lyrics are kind of opposite of the feel of the music, tho.

I agree with the others that there are things that could be done better in the mix, but since you can't change it I might consider a re-recording like you're thinking - I think it's a song worth the re-work.

    Good work!

I can "hear the room". (I think) are you recording in a "live" environment? Bare walls? Reflections?

No mate, it was all recorded track by track with headphones on. Only the Vocals used a microphone. Keyboards and Guitar are direct and the drums we're quickly assembled with Reason. Perhaps it was too much reverb on the Vocal?

Right, I apologize, I meant the vocals? Sounds like I can hear the walls? Doesn't sound like normal reverb echo, more like an early reflection from a wall? I could be wrong, I'm listening on my phones in a big room filled with screaming kids playing.

    Mr. Clean,

I like your voice. I agree with others about the mix being too narrow and adding some vocal harmonies to break it up a bit.

I could well be then. I didn't have a mic stand when I recorded it and my mic (dynamic) was lodged in between some books on a book shelf so quite possible. Like I said earlier, I didn't really know what I was doing when I recorded this. I used to just press record and do it. Mix it as I went along and get a reasonable sound and finish.

I don't work like that anymore. I'll repost a link to this song when I've re-recorded it and take in the advice from the posts above and give the song a bit more body. Harmonies and a decent mix.

Thanx again for listening everyone. Nothing better for objective thoughts than new ears.

Hey you're welcome Clean, here's a trick, if you don't have a treated space? You can (for example) take two coat racks? And hang a fluffy blanket between them? And then sing in to the blanket? This or other tricks can help deaden a live sounding room. Before I got my space treated, I was trying to get a girl to sing in to my comforter? But it was still on the bed, and she caught on pretty quick... Unfortunately, that session was cut short...

Mr. Clean - if that is true. I think you did a pretty darn good job. You have the talent. Now it just comes down to challenging yourself. Meaning, learn all you can about mixing and arranging. I can definitely hear the talent here. Keep up the great work.

Definitely a swinging sixties British psychedelic vibe to it, very Carnaby Street.

I love your vocals, they are pitched very much in 'Neil Tennant' territory and the 'Pet Shop Boys' like 'em or loathe them, have a wealth of material to study toward the end of getting massive (and million selling) sound out of that voice.

    I liked this a lot.

Cheers folks. Nice to get a bit of feedback and pointers in the right direction.

I'm planning on re-recording it this week sometime so I'll have to re-post it and see if I manage to make it better or mangle it.

    Thanx again for listening.
