Newb needs help - recording is off
Hi this just recently started happening: when I record with the metronome or with session drummer, my audio is in sync while i record. however, upon playback it seems my recorded track [audio] started before the metro and/or the sessoon drummer. another words, in my ears [earphones] it was in sync. but upon playback i have to move the recorded track to 1:01:250 to be in time. I hope i explained this properly. please help

First thing to check: Go to Options -> Audio -> Advanced and check the settings at the very bottom of the dialog. If your manual offset is anything other than zero, it may have been mis-configured. You have to figure out how many samples you need to correct for latency. The procedure has been documented several times on this forum. P.S. with all respect to daveny5, your computer specs and Windows version are not relevant. The type of audio interface might be, though. Whether you're running WDM or ASIO might be, too, as well as your buffer sizes.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

I have 828 mk3 MOTU. WDM or ASIO???? have to figure out how many samples you need to correct for latency????? buffer sizes???? Sorry. I am a REAL newbie. How do I check all those? I will try what you advised... THANK YOU

Set the MOTU as your recording and playback timing master then go to the drivers tab and put a check mark next to everything MOTU and un-check everything RealKrap I mean RealTek. Then go back to the General tab and run the wave profiler. Close and re-open Sonar. Mike

"im on it! THANK YOU! How can I get Realtek or RealKrap off completely, i see it EVERYWHERE?" The best way to do this is to go into the Windows Device Manager and disable it. "Which MOTU do i choose for Record Timing Master, there are many Moyu choices..." Select the one you will use for recording most often. Mike

I believe it is working now, thank you all again. I have a question though, in the OPTIONS>AUDIO >GENERAL what are good settings for the mixing latency. Actaully just the Buffer Size. I notice the Buffers in playback mode can not be less then 2. Unless it should be higher? Thanks, well now that 's two questions : )

There are no answers to the latency setting. It all depends on what your setup can handle. For recording MIDI through an external synth or MIDI controller or using the Input Echo, the lower the setting the better. Generally you would like to have the latency below 10ms for recording and then turn it up as you add plug-ins during the mixing phase. Of course if your system starts to glitch, pop, stutter and crackle you will need to raise it a little at a time until you get smooth playback. As far as the Buffers in playback mode, I've never touched mine. It's set at 2 and it has always stayed there. If your having problems with Playback or Recording you may have to increase the Playback and Record Buffers under Options/Audio/Advanced. Try 128, 256, 512 or 1024. Mike
