New-B alert.. No Sound....Grrrr.....!

Ok...Ok..... I know this has probably been posted a million times in the past but I have been trying to figure out how to get my sound going I have no patience to look for the post... I used to run Sonar 4 Producer... out of date I know... now... still out of date but oh well... I have just got a hold of Sonar 5.0.1 added the patch, installed it correctly, but now... NO SOUND! My computer makes sound, but none from the tracks. I have a Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 sound card, Windows Vista Prof. I have tried all that Help on the Sonar prog has advised, but still nothing. Am I missing something??

First off... where did you get the Sonar 5? The current version is Sonar 7.

    Yes, you are missing something.

If you were running SONAR 4 on the same system with the same sound card, updating to SONAR 5 should have made no difference at all. The setup is the same, and the S4 configuration would have been carried over into the new install. Determine what's different between then and now, and you'll have your answer.

(P.S. Folks will be more willing to help you out if you went out and bought a legal copy of SONAR.)

I bought it brand-new, still in packaging from an E-BAY Power seller. it has it's code bla bla bla and I just registered it a bit ago. I am installing it on a brand new laptop, supposedly the "Entertainment Experience"... for HP. I just uninstalled the program and reinstalled it, but still nothing. everything pulls up on the screen alright, but no sound....

Ok. I was a bad girl when I got Sonar 4... A friend wanted me to be able to make some beats for him on my "own" computer, so he zipped his copy off his computer onto mine. I didn't have full access to everything, but it integrated with a few of my other programs and it worked for what I needed it for. I played that computer to its frizzled end, just recently, and decided since I was getting this new laptop to get my very own new version of the next level up of Sonar than I was used to. I am a basics kinda girl, i figured 4 was fine so 5 would be fine... Anyway... the computer I am installing it on is also new to me. It is a HP Pavillion dv9810vs Notebook PC.
Its soundcard is not showing up on the Options-Audio tabs... What could it be??

I have a simple question that I would like a simple straight forward answer to... Thanks.
Can't we all just be sweet to eachother... and "nicely" give some advice?

Under Options/Audio/Advanced what driver mode is selected? Most, if not all on-board soundcards need to run on MME. Also, what are the other settings under Options/Audio/General?

On Driver Mode there are three options to choose from. WDM/KS, ASIO, and MME (32bit). I have the "first" checked. I have also tried the others. Under that option, there is the Dithering... which (Pow-r 3) is selected. Under that there are check boxes, which i have checked none of them, and those check boxes are labled: Share drivers with other programs; Use multiprocessing engine;Play effects trails after stopping; always open all devices; remove DC offset during record.
On the other side of this there are two options in which the first option is selected. Those two options are as follows: Trigger & freewheel (Best when soundcard has a word clock input); (Second choice) Full chase lock (best when chasing to MIDI time code).
I/O Buffer size is 128 KB, and write or read caching are not enabled.

On the General Tab: Playback timing Master: None
    Audio Driver Bit Depth: 16
Stereo Panning Law: OdB center, sin/cos taper, constant power
    Sampling rate: 44100
    Buffers in playback queue: 2
    Buffer size: Fast

    Thank you for your help!

OK. Set the Playback and Record Timing Master to your soundcard. Then go to the Advanced tab and select MME as the driver. Then go back to the General tab and run the wave profiler. Close and re-open Sonar.
Try to play something back and see if you have sound.

Great, glad to be of service.
You might want to try using the ASIO or WDM/KS drivers because they are of better quality but as I said before, since you're using the on-board soundcard you might be limited to MME.
You can also download ASIO4ALL (FREE) and you might get better performance with that too.
But you really should consider getting yourself a better soundcard/interface. You will be much happier in the long run.
Lots of good info on this site. http://homerecording.beaglesound.com/9.html

    Enjoy

Good for you, although we did expose the fact that you used a pirated copy of Sonar 4 for several years which says a lot about you. We're sensitive to people using pirated copies of Sonar and when someone is supposedly a new user of a 3 year old product we get a little suspicious. I think its fair to ask the question.

very fair indeed, at that time I did not realize the extent of wrong to which I was doing. I have since realized, since having some of my own stuff over the past two years pirated... How rotten it feels to have your crap used without permission or $$. I am pretty stiff about it now. I could have had Sonar 7, but it would have been off another friends computer. But, like I said, I have come to the light on the error of my ways.
