Her Promise...long intro..should i nix it?

Hello,

I have a song up i would love you to comment on the mix.

There's a piano intro about a minute long, then about 5 seconds silence then rest of song...
the things a guys gotta do to get the green light from the bored of director is getting harder and harder! If i can get it to sound decent i may get some leverage on some new headphones.

Thank you!

Tell her Jon says "It sounds great, now get me the cans!", feel free to use any expletive in between 'the' and 'cans'. Trust me it'll work, I'm a relationship expert, I've gotten through 1000's of 'em...

I'm loving this intro, sounds like three intertwined patterns happening at once in a sort of futuristic Debussy/Blues style, and then a lovely trademark No How tune afterward.

    You are a gifted man.

I watzs gonna tzsay tzsomething eltzse about the mix but I couldn't tzspell tszibilantsz...

No, I'm out for now, until the next time!! I'm not sure what phones yet. I put a 'distress call' out on the Gear forum this morning to see what the recommendations are, so we'll see what the responses are...

Larry, I have a couple pair of SENNHEISER HD 280PRO that I like quite a bit. Of all the headphones I've tried thus far, these seem to translate the best to a set of speakers.

AAAHHH - I can't figure out which song I'm suppose to listen to? It's gotta be one of those, under-your-nose things, because that's where I loose everything. So Rick which song do I listen to?

Whew - it wasn't me this time. Ok now I can comment. I like the bass also. The piano sounds really great, nice subtle guitar. I like the mix, there's good space for the instruments to have their own place.

Ok, I've waited long enough to say that your voice reminds me of Peter Gabriel and this is a good thing - very unique and attention grabbing. I can only guess that someone else has said this already, but I had to say it again if someone has.

I love the sound of that piano in the beginning, what is it?

The intro "may" be a touch long, but the intro in some form/fashon must stay, I like it, it gave me a file noir vibe? Like an old black and white movie?

Oh wait a minute there bobalouie, the transition to the song was somewhat "radical"? In hindsight, I'm not sure how the intro "fits" with the song? I like both the intro, and the song? But perhaps, not unlike me and the ex, we're a bit better appart? Forrest said he and Jenny went together like peas and carrots? But something about the song and the intro seem to be incongruent.

2:30 vocals (bed) seemed to get really loud? And some of the vocals seemed to get lost in the whispery parts around the I do (2:40).

2:58 "stayed" has some pretty hard S's and actually "S"everal more parts after that. Almost like a mic technique issue that started right there?

It said that the Genre was "Alternative : Indie", it didn't really sound Indian at all to me?

Your music gives me kind of a Randy Newman vibe to it sometimes? Which is not bad, he's a very famous writer/artist ;-)

Another unique song, which I expected. How long have you been writing lyrics? It must be a gift. I guess I'd have to agree with Robby on the intro not really fitting the song, but I like them both. The vocals were a little hard to hear here and there. Mind you, I've only listened to it once so far.

Really great playing and another great song--I like it!

And sorry, here's the teacher in me coming out: you said 'she lays alone...' That should be 'she lies alone...' And the next line 'half asleep I'd LIE there.' (and I'll let you find the other one...) But if you don't care to change it, I promise not to tell anyone. And believe me, you're not the only one who mixes those things up!

    Jon,
Peter Gabriel...lol...no one has said that. Thanks for the comments on the mix and for stopping by twice.

    robby,
Yeah, I took the tablas out so it's not indie anymore...it's acoooostic. I'll prob nix intro. It's a truepiano 40 day trial i'm trying to do as many piano songs as i can come up with before the 40 days is up...pant,pant,pant......
i'll go in and fix those trouble spots. Thanks for the notes.
Randy newman? Peter Gabriel? i personally think i'm more like like Barbara Steisand then either of those guys but I'm going deafffff.

What a great song Rick! I love the piano in the beginning. To me, it sets up the song nicely by driving home the lyrics that come after it. I see a lone musician working dilligently away on his next masterpiece and then suddenly turning around and seeing his wife standing in the doorway. Then the 'song' starts, as he realizes that he has been neglecting her, and that she's been so supportive in spite of it. The arrangement is really good to my ears. As usual for you, everything is very creative. There is a spot on the vocal track that seems to have a missing word at 2:16. I think at 2:30, you must have done some punching in there, because you suddenly have a much louder vocal coming in. By the way, is that piano the new Truepiano demo? It sounds great! Did I say that this is a great song? There's some really great writing in this.

I would shorten the intro or at least change it up a bit to better connect the rest of the song. The vocals really do sound like Peter was there. Excellent piece!

I use Beyerdynamics 770 pro headphones. Theuy go for about 200$ and have been real happy with them.

Don't know how much leverage you will get, but if it is in that price range, look into them.

I also like the intro, but it doesn't seem to fit.

    Howdie Janet,
I missed you with last reply. behind every dark corner, every silent moment of aloneness, every secret unknown place there is a school teacher waiting to fix my poor grammar!.......BUSTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll go into soundclick and correct. Thank you for pointing it out. and thank you for listening!!!!

Wow,Darin, Thanks for the kind words. That is exactly the scenario i had in mind in putting the two movements together. I wanted to make sure that there was some connection while each movement had it's own strength...i guess i'm trying to say i wanted to make sure neither was a bowel movement. Thank you for your comments....i'll fix 2:16.

    Hi Dan,
I am going to tweek it till it flows better. Thank you for saying so and listening!

    Ron,
I am going to check those phones out. I won't be getting any for a while so i have time to do my homework. Thanks for listening and telling me what you think.

    Doug,
Hey, it makes it all worthwhile when i get a review like that....Thank you for the listen!

    Jon,
I like Ricky Nelson...as i like Peter gabriel and randy newman..just don't hear the similarity.... lol.......it is funny though..

    robby,
I'll check into those phones, as i told Ron, i've got plenty of time to do research...lol....
As you'll see below i don't look like Barbara Steisand but with time and hormones i'll be coming around.
    (I like Randy Newman...just didn't quite hear the similarity...lol..)

You know, if I would have thought about it long enough, I would have caught the connection between the long intro (just playing along while your wife patiently waits) and then the song finally coming in. I think it's brilliant. And unfortunately, I can relate.

Rick, Once again fantastic lyrics. When it comes to writing music you have a gift. The piano playing was top notch, along with the over all sound of the mix. I did think the intro was a bit long but, it kept me interested in wanting to hear were the song was going. In my opinion, I thought the intro was soooooo good that it should be made into a song itself. EXELLENT job as usual.

Rick, definitely worthy of new headphones. I didn't feel like the intro was too long. I usually hate long intros but this actually worked for me. I like this. Great lyrics! Vox a little quiet at times for me (old ears). Another great song.

    Kev,
Thanks for the cheers. I have the attention span of a housefly but thought i'd do something outside the box, besides i was drooling over the Truepiano demo and thought it would work for a lead in and paint a wider scenario for the piece. Thanks for the comments.

    Tom,
lol...i'll tell the management you said so! I'll listen for quiet vox and adjust. I have about 50 vocal tracks and ya know how hard it is to babysit all those faders??????
Thanks for ears and the friendship at SC....I'll certainly be buggin' ya.
