Komplete 5 in Sonar

I've been on the road for a week or so.

My new purchase of Komplete 5 arrived last week. I was home for a few hours over the weekend and loaded all the software and samples.

So today I'm about to try launching the instruments and figuring out what/how etc they do.

Ya'll know I could labor away at the NI site trying to learn this stuff from strangers but I'm hoping some kind acquaintance here could offer some advice.

My new DAW is offline only so I'll be using that sort of activation.

I'd enjoy learning any tips you can share about any of the NI instruments.

I'm basically thinking soley in terms of using this stuff within SONAR.

My first question: Do I have to activate each item or is there a global Komplete activation process?

thanks,
mike

mike you can do the lot in one go, as the number you get I'm guessing is specific to komplete and not the seperate components.

you don't need to activate it using your DAW. just do "offline" activation, save the file to the desktop, drop it to a USB pen drive... load it up in ya browser.. then you'll get another file..

again wack that on ya pen drive.. import into ya service center app.. and all is well with the world..

you might as well do that while your installing the sample disks... as thats the bit that took me ages.

might as well download the updates as well.. there's plenty of em.

    Thanks Fog,

While you were writing I found the "Service Center" .pdf and was reading about the offline all at once activation.... what a relief!

I'm real excited to try this stuff as my background is audio and I don't have a lot of synth and sampler experience. I think the learning experience will be great.

I'll have to go in to town to grab updates... my country hook up is too slow.

Thanks for the hand holding... it's comforting!

    best regards,
    mike

well EW's around a lot also and he knows the things far better than I do, I'm relativly new to using it. Some of the posters here are also on the NI forum.

you can install it on 2 machines.. with the service center, I have on my laptop / main machine. Only thing with that for me is , my main pc is a dual boot, so I can only have it on XP and not both XP / vista... oh well.

some of the things take a lot of learning , other things are more straight forward to get into. After you get it all set-up check out the community bit where people upload patches also.

the one for reaktor is massive, I've not even started using that yet to it's full potential.

I did find the kontakt videos far better than the manual personally, they are on youtube or as a download also.

you might want to get kore player also (I use the full one).. as you can integrate your sounds into that.. mix and match sounds / fx and morph between sounds.

You can use the NI activation service center.. you will need to install that also.. and you can select offline installation then save the file(s) to a dongle and open them in a pc with internet.

then it will tell you what to do from there

OK well here's a hot tip. Log In to NI before you get started... I just spent 30 minutes in a mobious strip experience trying to log in... evidently an ancient NI forum ID conflict sent me into the realm of the uniformed... I got caught in a loop where the site was sending me login info update emails but not telling me to go look for an email. :-)

Now that I'm at the end of the process I have my .naf and the web page is just inactive... I would have expected a "all done" type message.

I guess the offline method is not as slick as the online.

Fingers crossed... I off to my DAW.

    thanks,
    mike

not sure about the loop thing that your on about. I mean you have to sign up to get into the parts, much like here really with your "my account" and "forum" usernames.

you should be fine now after the naf file is imported into service centre. the only thing I changed after install was upping my asio buffers a bit as well they were quite low and since then no problems.

you can change the quality mode of some of the synths also, but from what I recall you have a quad? so not really something you have to worry about.. while messing about with the synths you might as well get the other updates etc going to save a bit of time. I always set up such things in the day, and they auto start late just I go to sleep and have the pc shut itself down. in the morning I have new updates =)

    WOW! Yikes!

I just played Acosutik and B4... I'm beyond excited! It's a huge step forward for my home system.

I think the login problem was caused by me... but the activation site pages were not informing me of my problem so I got caught it some sort of loop where I was going round and round... all over now.

    thanks very much,

I stopped using NI stuff due to the service centre,

Its appaling---when I turn on my V-synth (connected via USB) the service centre unauthorises my software), when I go on to the NI website to reautherise it wont do it because they have screwed up my account and have to wait till they answer emails.

I will NEVER buy anything from NI again

That's a bummer... and a good reason to not like it.

I could nit pick and point out how I got confused and such because of inexact instructions and button labels... but I'm going to enjoy the good sounds for now and hope everything runs smooth for my simple single desktop DAW setup.

    best,
    mike

    ?

There's no reason why that should be happening. Contact support and PM me your support ticket number; I'll get some people to look at it.

@ Mike- make sure you run everything in standalone and rebuild databases/set library paths where appropriate before trying to use them as plugins- you'll save yourself lots of grief. Always run any NI instrument in standalone immediately after an install or update; otherwise the plugin may not initialize correctly (or at all).

    Hi EW,

    Can you elaborate?

I actually did try to run Acoustik stand alone for a moment but could not get any sound out of it. So I opened SONAR and loaded it as a soft synth and it seemed to work great. I haven't gone further.

    thanks,

Just as I said, Mike. Run all of them in standalone.

If AP isn't working in standalone, check your audio/MIDI settings. Also, remember that all the sample players load up empty...

    Thanks EW.

I WILL take your advice. Thanks very much for sharing the tip.

I had loaded up a sample set and spent a few moments on my audio midi settings but did not see a way in Acoustik to specify the audio output. I saw midi activity on my MOTU Traveler. I tried both omni and channel 1 inputs. I also tried echo etc.

When I loaded Acoustik into a fresh SONAR project and loaded a sample set I could play it imediately. I must be missing something real simple.

    Thanks again,
    mike

The routing tab in audio/MIDI settings is where you configure your ins and outs for all NI products.

    Thanks,
I better break out the manual and go looking for that routing tab.

    best,
    mike

    edit to add:

I found it under "File". AP stand alone works great now. Thanks again!

Please don't apologize... you've helped a whole bunch. I'm working thru the synths getting them all to run in stand alone. Most launch with the setup dialog. It's seemingly just a coincidence that Acoustik did not and that was the first I tried.

    Mike:
Once you spend some time with it, you'll wonder how you ever got along without some of NI's stuff. Kontakt 2 is my go-to sampler and B4II can't be beat for Hammond sounds, and if you have multiple MIDI keyboards, each can play a different manual. FM7 - what can I say? Everything Yamaha did and then some for FM synthesis. Absynth can get some wild ethereal sounds, and the possibilities in Reaktor 5 are something else. One of my favorite ensembles in Reaktor is Steampipe (I think there are a couple of different versions). As you can guess from the names, I have the older original Komplete series.
