Frustrated

For some reason sound won't actually come out of my speakers from the program.
It's REALLY frustrating because I can't figure out why, especially when every thing else on my lap top plays normally.
Help?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Need all your laptop specs, soundcard info, version of Sonar, etc etc before we can take a stab at it!

    Sonar Home Studio 6

I'm not sure about the other info on my computer exactly, but when I go to sound and then the playback tab there are two things:
Speakers/Headphones - Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC

    and

HDMI - Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC

The first one is set to default.

Where would I go on my lap top to find out the soundcard info for you??

The sigma tel is your soundcard. basically it's actually a chip on the laptop's motherboard.

we still need more info from you, tho. what are you trying to play in SHS? are you opening one of the tutorials? one of the demo projects? importing an audio wave from your hard drive? an mp3?

please remember that we can't see what you're doing and we need as much info on what you're doing as you can possibly give us.

I've tried to open the demo projects, importing audio, and importing MIDI and MP3.
The only thing I haven't tried is the tutorials, which I actually may have when I first got the program a few months ago. (I got frustrated then and quit messing with it.)

    Any other questions?

    Is this George W. Bush?

The tutorials are the first thing you should do, but keep in mind that Tutorial 1 is MIDI only and unless you have a real synth (which I don't think you have) you need to use softsynths to get any sound. First you should use Tutorial5.cwb to check your soundcard setup.

    1) Go to Options-Audio-Drivers and make sure your Realtek is selected
    2) Go to Options-Audio-Advanced and make sure the Driver Mode is WDM
    3) Go to Options-Audio-General and press the Wave Profiler button.
    4) Load Tutorial5.cwb
    5) Hit Play

Then do Tutorial1 and it should work if Tutorial5 worked.
Home Studio comes with the Roland TTS-1 and a few other softsynths. Load Tutorial1.cwp and follow these instructions:

    1) View-Synth Rack
    2) Click the Insert DXi button (looks like an asterisk)
    3) Click on TTS-1 - Check First Synth Output and Synth Property Page checkboxes
    4) Edit Select All (to select all tracks)
    5) Track-Property-Output
    6) Select TTS-1 from the MIDI Outputs pulldown (that makes the TTS-1 the output for all MIDI tracks)
    7) Hit play

Try Dave's suggestions first. if you can't get past the first part, then change to MME driver mode:
    OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED>DRIVER MODE = MME
    close SHS
    restart SHS
    let the wave profiler run
then pick up on his first set of #4 instructions above (load tutorial #5 and play) and then continue from there.
