No sound on Midi

Hi, Just upgraded to MC4 today and can't find an input or output that will work and give any sound on the MIDI track.
When opening MC4 and choosing "Normal" from the "New Project File" box the audio track and midi track appears. The audio works fine.
I'm using a Creative Prodikeys keyboard and an M-Audio 2496 soundcard.

I've had sound when choosing "General Midi Authoring Virtual Synth" so somethings happening. What I am not sure.
Any help would be appreciated.

You must insert TTS as the soft synth and set up the tracks in/out to get sound...Do the tutorial #8 for MC4...and /or visit my site www.herbhartley.com and navigate to the music pages and read my step by step on setting up TTS to get sound.

After doing the tutorial & checking my site...if you have questions..or need more assistance, come on back.

Have now got sound and have got as far as trying to bank and patch. when I do this from the track there doesn't seem to be an ok click option after checking the patch. Is the bank 15488 preset normal 0?

when you click on the BANK and choose that preset, it will stay in the window.

the one you listed is the normal default bank. that has all of the GM sounds in it.

you should work thru the tutorials as well. they have a lot of good info in them!

Found the bank and patch in the <INSERT> menu. Am I right to use the bank (15488 preset normal 0).
Have a piano sound but no other patches seem to work. Back to the manual...

hmm...not sure you're looking at the right place for bank and patch changes. you should be doing that from the properties of the MIDI track, right under the INPUT and CHANNEL pull down menus.

Thanks Herb, I've managed to get three MIDI tracks up and running with different instruments thanks to that really useful website of yours.
Will be looking on the web to check out some new sound fonts this evening!

Just remember..TTS is a midi synth and the sounds in it are midi....

The SFZ player is a totally different synth from TTS and it uses sound fonts..or sampled files (audio files) The SFZ player and fonts will give a much better sounding instrument.....but some of the fonts can be a bit tricky to set up (UNZIP) and get working. If you have questions about the fonts....just post here because most people here are using some form of font based synth, and can assist you with your questions.

Huh i though midi did not have sounds!?!?!?!?

TTS is samples just not the same format as some other samplers.

Are they really Rob? I thought they were synthesized sounds (created from oscillators, filters, etc) and NOT sampled recordings. I don't remember TTS-1 having samples loaded on the hard drive.

Ya got me there beag, Most GMs set are some sort of either wave table or or embedded chip type sample sets.

TTS may not be samples as in Giga samples or sound fonts, but they are some kind of sound samples mapped to GM, they may be made from filters and oscillator, but they are not directly from a synth from what i can tell, as TTS or Edirol do not have adjustable features like a true synth. It was my understanding from other post on other sites that Edirol and TTS for that matter were rather small shallow layers samples, kinda like a cheap sound font GM set really, with a program built around it to play the samples.

So i am not sure how they do it, my point was rather that is is not midi sounds per se, as midi does not have sound, it was kind of a back handed joke really.
