No audio in Music Creator 4

I'm using Music Creator 4 with an external audio card/firewire device, the Inspire GT. It used to work fine in XP Professional on my old computer, but it doesn't on my new one with Vista Home Premium. Actually it worked partially before: I could hear audio playback, I just couldn't record. But then I downloaded the Vista driver from Presonus for the Inspire GT, and now it doesn't work at all. The timeline cursor doesn't move and I get an error message.

Here are the links to 3 printscreens which I think explain the situation better than I could in words.

Thanks!

John

Where you got the second screen shot, on the drivers tab, what is listed? See if you can change it to ASIO or WDM. Disable the onboard sound card, to start.

Beagle, can you post the link for downloading the Vista drivers for MC4. I looked on the Cakewalk site and couldn't find it.

And Greg, I'll check out your suggestions when I get home tonight, thanks.

John I'm not talking about drivers for MC4, I meant for your soundcard, the Presonus Inspire. go to presonus' website and find the latest vista drivers for the inspire.

John, I see you downloaded the Vista drivers, but did they install? I couldn't even begin to tell you where to check that.
Reese, could this be the thing where you have to delete the aud.ini?
    I'll look for the post.
For general information, and I can't remember, when updating drivers, do we have to run the wave profiler?

typically no, you don't have to run the wave profiler again after installing new drivers, but it never hurts to try it.

Well, we're making progress. I went to the Drivers tab in the Cakewalk Audio Setup, and I selected the Inspire GT Drivers and set it to ASIO in the Advanced tab. Now I can hear playback, but I still can't record. To be more specific, I can record, it's just that the resulting audio clip has no content. I see the signal in my Inspire GT Control panel but it's not coming into Cakewalk.

Here;s another jpeg. Are there any clues here which might explain why the audio is not coming in?

    Thanks,

I can't see your jpg here at work on the server you've stored it - it's blocked.

but I'll guess from your last post, look at your properties on your audio track. what are the different choices you can make for the INPUT and what do you have selected? also, which input on the inspire do you have your instrument plugged into?

When you armed the track by pressing the RED R button, did you follow that by clicking the record button or the play button?

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

The record button. or to be more accurate the keyboard shortcut "r." I think I have the correct input selected. There's only one stereo output on the sound card. I'll double check when I get home tonight. Try opening that jpeg again. It just opened for me here at work, so I don't know.

Make sure the Inspire's output is on. Record mono instruments and mics on a left or mono track, not stereo (I know that doesn't addess your 'not recording' problem, but when recording guitars or mics and you use a stereo input, you'll only have playback on one side of the stereo track).
What is listed in the 'option>audio>playback and recording masters' menu? Deselect the onboard sound card if it's checked/highlighted.
Make sure you have disabled the onboard sound card.
If you don't, there could be conflicts, like the onboard trying to control the audio when you want the Inspire to control it.

Slightly off topic John - it's much easier to view your screenshots while reading your questions if you 'embed' them in your post.

To do this, just click on the image button when composing or editing your post - this inserts the [image][/image] code - you can either paste the link to your images in between the two brackets: [image]PASTE LINK HERE[/image] or type the code either side of an existing link.

Just to clarify - you MUST ARM THE TRACK FIRST. click on the little "R" on the track and it will turn red - THEN you can click on the RECORD button of the transport.

I don't want to confuse the thread so sorry for the slightly off topic reply. You mention that you have to record your guitar as mono from the Presonus device? I've been doing it as a stereo output and as you say you can only hear one side on playback? This is interesting and certainly not what I expected. Thanks.

I'm sorry ... I've left out a lot of information. I'm not using the paired mono inputs and outputs on the front of the GT inspire because then MC4 needs to be closed and re-opened for me tow switch from mic to keyboard. So I have everything going through my Mackie mixer into the RCA inputs on the back of the card/box.

I am definitely arming the track and then going into record, and I'm fairly certain that I have disabled the onboard soundcard. I'll check when I get home tonight. Thanks to all of you for staying involved with me on this.

Oh, and thanks for telling me how to attach the images. I'll do it that way next time.

Okay, if you're running the mics/guitars through the mixer, stereo RCAs to the interface, that will send a stereo signal to the stereo track in MC.
When running a guitar, mono keyboard or mic directly into the sound card, you should record on a mono track so you'll hear it on both sides.
