24-hour laptop battery

Been waiting for this for a while. You could record an outdoor festival from start to finish without recharging. Or play video games all the way across the Pacific ocean.

24-hour laptop battery

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I give it 3 hours tops running pro audio apps. We have batteries already that are technically 10+ hour batteries, but running pro audio are at about 90 minutes. All that power management destroys audio processing capability and gets turned off anyways.

If you've got a laptop running XP, you're good. So what happens when OEM sales of XP are stopped? Eventually that's going to happen--or will HP have to make some sort of deal with MS in order to keep the faucet turned on for a while yet?

Or maybe HP's acquisitions manager will be on the phone in January 2009, trying to buy about 10,000 copies of the OEM XP...

Hard2hear makes a good point about the extraordinary demands of audio production -- that disk is always spinning.

The good news is there are new materials coming (don't know when), that will be based on current research in biomedical engineering. These dielectric materials are expected to contain 6 times (or more) the surface area of current lithium-ion batteries, and will give you the kind of battery life you're looking for.

I remember a few years ago (or what seems like just a few years ago), hearing a radio news story about a new IBM breakthrough that will allow CDs to hold 10-times their current storage capacity, and at the time I wondered if I would live to see that day -- well, DVD has been with us for a few years, and already I hear of research that will lead to improvements in their storage capacity.

Today I read of comet Swift-Tuttle's return (in about 130 years), and look forward to seeing that light show (Comet S-T is responsible for our annual August Pleiades meteor display).

Life is so damn fascinating -- I don't want to miss any of it!

I regularly use a UPS (Un-interuptable Power Source) for all my remote recording sessions. That's just in case some drunk stumbles into my power cord and yanks it loose!! I'm thinking of making a portable power source from two rechargeable gel-cell batteries and regulating it down to 18 volts for my laptop. I don't know how long it would last, but (let's see..1.1 amperes max draw from the laptop, and a 7 ampere supply....) might last 6 hours!! Just thinking out loud. A lawn mower battery would last a while, and a car battery would last longer!! All sorts of possibilities.

I think there are lots of those on the market, here is an example.
