Mixing near field monitors, I must be missing previous posts

I'm looking at getting new monitors.

I must be missing some previous posts on the topic, hasn't that been a topic or discussed here somewhere here? I've done a couple searches and nothing, I'm sure I've missed it or something.

I'm looking at some M-Audio Studiophile BX8a Deluxe monitors to put on speaker stands - near field.
Does any one have a pair, any comments? I dem'od a few diff mfgs today at the old Sam Ash, and I'm on the fence. Trying to have a budget around 600.00. If I need to save some more cashola, that's an answer too.

Come to think of it, this is my wife's birthday this month, I believe she would want a set of monitors. (not, so that's of critical importance to me as well in the next week or so).

Anyone want to share any info on monitor preferences?

Where they should be. Thanks! I don't know what I was thinking. I wonder about me sometimes.

Check out Alesis M1 Active MK2's.
I've owned this pair for about 3 years now and they're worth more than the cheap price of only 199$.
Unless you're trying to upgrade from Genelec or something.

The freq response is from 45hz to 20khz. 8.5" woofer.
    Really flat response.
My right monitor took a nose dive off a shelf about 5 feet up, damaged the woofer cone, still sounds great. Could never tell it took a hit if you didn't see the cone. Great sound all around. I've got the money for pretty much any monitor out there, but I stick with these. Best investment (if you wanna call 199$ an investment) I've made in music, besides Sonar... of course.

It's tough at that price point. Also the room is very important. The problem with small monitors and under-spec'd rooms is your mix can sound fine in that room, but will often disapoint in other environments. If you can't take your room out of the mix, you can't take your mix out of the room.

B&W 802D's are certainly worth a listen, but expensive.

+1 for the Alesis-one of mine also took a dive while re-arranging with no effects-rock solid-they`re meant to be a bit "dark"whatever that means, but IMHO i believe you can tune your ears to any monitors as long as you have an A/B facility to switch between your mix and your reference cd-i have 2 cheap dvd players with a radio shack switcher which is good enough for my relatively lo-fi demos.Still lust after Mackies or JBL`s though-see a related post by CJ regarding calibration!

    What is your budget?

    I wouldnt go with maudio

    I have a set of Dynaudio BM12's

but they're probably a little to expensive.

B&W's on ebay are a bargain and an amazing sound.

Depends what you want from them?

There's a pair of JBL 4326's on eBay right now for less than $700. I bought a pair "B" stock from a guy on eBay that are fantastic. Looked brand new to me and I saved several hundred $$ in the process. You can get those for $899 on eBay. Definitely a major step up from what you are looking at right now for only a few hundred more...

    Just my .02...
