New Voxengo Elephant 3

Hi all,

I know lot of us here (including me) use the Voxengo stuff. I just got an email announcing this so I thought I'd pass it on.

It looks really nice.

There you have it.

How does it stack up against Boost11? (what I use)

I have Elephant 2.5 right now and I think it does a better job on most stuff. Bass heavy songs seemed to make Boost 11 not too happy. Elephant has a few different limiting algorithms that offer a lot of flexibility. It's is very transparent and is hard to make sound bad. (unless you are determined to win the loudness wars by just using this plug)

It's not a two knob simplicity plug. It is a bit more complex, but I love it. Plus Aleksey (the developer) has VERY good customer support. But then Cake is no slouch there either.

Try the demo and see what you think.

I've tried Boost 11 several times, tried it on a lot of different styles of music, and in my humble opinion, it doesn't compare with Elephant, not even close!

So its capable of better results than boost11?... interesting..and native 64bit as well.

Any advantages to Elephant .... been considering buying Ozone 3 - got a quote for £116. so i'm split atm... any advice?

I can't offer an actual opinion on the merits of Elephant vs. the limiter available in Ozone (other than to say that I'm an Elephant user and I'm quite happy with it). But Ozone kinda trumps Elephant in the sense that it is an entire suite of mastering tools rather than just a limiter...so it's kinda an apples and fruit basket comparison.

By the way...I'm kinda surprised at the swiftness at which this thread got bumped off the SONAR forum.

I love elephant. Probably my fav 3rd party plug. To my ears, it adds depth to a song - lifts and separates the components. Boost isn't bad, put seems to just push things forward and adds some harshness, esp. when pushed.

But then we all hear things different.

As far as the Elephant vs Ozone thing goes, I have the Ozone package that came with Sound Forge, and I don't think the limiter in the Ozone package is near as good as Elephant. Elephant is a lot more versatile, and I'm able to get a much cleaner signal at higher levels. It's the only limiter I use anymore.

Well.... tried out the demo..... and thought very nice indeed... worked well on my mix which was once being distorted by boost 11.

    just wondering guys...

I'm thinking of upgrading to Sonar 8 PE. How does Elephant compare to the VC-64 that was part of Sonar 7 PE?

Two different animals. VC64 is a mastering Comp./EQ, Elephant is strictly a limiter, even though it can add some different colors and flavors. I use both regularly, and most of the time together. Love'em both!

    There's a test-file on the Kjaerhus-site (http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/mpl-1.php?Selection=3)
back then it has been pretty impressive for me to listen to it, and was the reason to buy the MPL-1 limiter..

    I now own
    - Voxengo Elephant v2.7
    - MPL-1 PRO SE
    - UAD Precission Limiter
    - Boost 11

I just tested these limiters again with a sample of the 40Hz tone that I had cut from the test-file.
it's interesting to hear how the sound flips when the limiter goes from "increasing gain->0dB" to really "limiting/compressing the signal".
So if you only want to increase the peaks to 0dB then there's not a huge difference between those limiters..
The release times have the greatest impact on forming the final sound..
I was positively surprised that the Boost 11 sounded pretty good on the 40Hz test-signal, the Precission Limiter was a bit disapointing at default "auto"-release-time-settings.., Elephant was the toughest to adjust and the MPL-1 was still sounding smooth in every situation..
I'll have to test them again sometime on some of the projects I am working on..

    oh I forgot about
    - Ozone3 Limiter (just too many to choose from)

In Brickwall modus it also sounded very good
