Im proud to announce - I have enrolled in University

So after a few weeks of deciding what direction I want to take in life, wondering if Audio is the choice to make, or if a University Degree would be more beneficial. I have finally made a decision and enrolled in University.
Its through open.edu.au. I will be studying a Bachelor of Technology (Information Systems).

Very exciting, but quite scary at the same time. Im starting my first subjects in Q4 December this year. Texts and Concepts, and Information System Fundamentals.. hmm fun

Just want to say thanks for all your replies on my old thread - that got moved to Techniques WTF - HERE

Most of my time studying will be spent at work. As some of you know I work a graveyard shift in a call centre here in Sydney, and will have the majority of the time to study. This time in the past was spent on this forum and others.. I will certainly have a few minutes a night to pop in and say hi - Most probably be asking some tech questions as well.

Finally, you're gonna make something of yourself.

My best wishes to you on your endevor. I'm in IT and have been since 1978. I love it 'cuz IMHO, it's a creative process using technology (a lot like making music with SONAR).

And he seems to be getting bigger by the moment.

Why not Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Hewlet or Packard?

    Hello,

That certainly has not been in your favor. Which is why you are in the "state" you are in approaching 30. I wish you the best of luck on your studies and for the future. If you are going to pursue this course of study set out to be the best there is - straight A's. Absorb as much as you can. If possible after a year or two get an internship in your chosen field. When you graduate you will be competing against others who graduated at 21 and have 7 years work experience.

So.. Arthur C Clarke it is.

An educated man would know he would be properly addressed as SIR Arthur C Clarke, CBE, were he still alive. He was knighted in 1998 or so.

Congrats Planefaced. Education is always good for anyone.

Since you are an admirer of SIR Arthur C Clarke, CBE, I assume you have read Childhood's End - considered by many to be his masterpiece. If you enjoyed that, I would heartily suggest you find a copy of Venus On The Half Shell, but Kilgore Trout.

It answers the eternal question "Why was mankind created just to suffer and die?"

My favourite writing of Sir Arthur C Clarke is Profiles Of The Future.
    Great read.

Yea I have to agree. I finished a MBA before I was 28 and what am I doing now. Running a Toy and hobby shop with my brother.
Music at the moment is my hobby, but maybe I'll get to do what my neighbor did at 55, become the music director at his church. Not great pay, but he is loving it. He has been doing it for the last 6 years after he lost his corporate job after 30 years with the same company. Also now in my mid 40's I have taken several IT classes for the hell of it

My wife's cousins husband got a law degree and never practiced law a day in his life. After two years of law school realized he hated it but figured he had to stick it out. Probably good thing for him with the advanced degree, but still funny that he is a cop instead.

So Plainfaced don't let anyone get you down about starting later in life, most of us in this modern economy will have several careers in our lifetime. I hope it all works out for you, and you should lighten up on the forums when you start school

I have been in IT since 1989, working at everything from mainframe development in COBOL and product packaging (install) using extremely complicated symbolic substituted thousands of lines of JCL - to - training and prodiuct support - to - desktop support - to - network support - to - my MCSE and consulting - to owning my own business (www.technicalrs.com) doing IT support and consulting for small businesses in the Atlanta area.

It's a great field to be in if you like learning new things all the time. The only thing I can warn you about in choosing IT as your field of study is that, even though all of the fundamentals will always help you and will add significant value to your skills, this industry changes so fast that your education will soon become obsolete. It's inevitable, and not a negative thing, but something to be aware of when it feels like it's smacking you in the back of the head

Well plainfaced, I'm glad the pic wasn't of you. If that was the case I'd think you might be too old for college. ;-)

Now, back to the salt mines for you boy. When you get a IT job you'll have a lot more money to blow on cool toys. Look at Space. Just dont move to houston or you'll be cleaning up around your house after the episodic hurricanes.

    luck!
