Inceasing available RAM in Vista using ReadyBoost
This topic has been bandied about in the S7 and SHS6 forums so I though I'd drop in here to get some folks thinking. I recently purchased a 2GB HC/HS SD card (High Capacity/High Speed) SD card for usage with Windows Vista ReadyBoost to enable super fetch on my Dual core HP laptop. The results I got were somewhat promising. In the past I was unable to connect a second video monitor to my laptop while recording into S7PE or GTP3 without experiencing the dreaded motorboating. Additionally I couldn't playback projects that had a large amount of midi or a full 32 tracks of audio. I would have to mute tracks and solo tracks (archive tracks in S7) to selectively mix my projects. No longer the case. I was able to connect a second video monitor, playback and record to large projects have multiple plugins running, all without having to mute or solo parts out. Woo hoo! it works like the guys at SOS said it would! One thing though. I had one instance of approximately a second where I lost audio completely. This is even though the machine is running in optimized mode and with all but the most essential processes running. However this was one instance during 4 hours of work. It happened during playback and not recording. Still looking into why I had the brief loss of audio. but still the performance gain was great! For more info on ReadyBoost go here. For More info on SuperFetch go here.

Big +1 on this for you Vista users. On Doc's advice, I got a 4gig USB flash drive a few weeks back and it's made a very noticable difference in my PC's performance. The key word in Doc's post is 'fast' though - if the drive you get isn't fast enough for the job, the option to use Ready Boost won't be displayed in the AutoPlay options. I'm not completely au fait with what is and isn't considered fast but the stick I got reads at 25MB/sec and writes at 18MB/sec and it seems well up to the job. Great post Doc - it's amazing how many of us are/were unaware of this great little Vista feature.

Not surprising that you have to throw so much hardware at a Microsoft product to make it work.

Ready boost and such only really work if your system doesnt have much RAM. You would find bigger gains by just adding more RAM to the laptop. I would max it out at 4GB, if your on Vista 32 bit.

dippin, Yes any increase in RAM will provide better performance as would going from a dual core to a quad core. But that is not always possible on a laptop. The RAM on the machine described was already maxed out at 2GB ( BIOS would not allow more). And the motherboard did not support quad core mobile processors. (Past tense as the HP laptop has since died). A lot has changed since this was posted over a year ago. I now run a DAW which is purpose built with more than enough RAM for the time being. However to offload the paging files to a HC/HS SD card could be a solution for those who have limitations due to platform (ie., laptop with memory limits). Readyboost does not act as additional RAM in the traditional sence. Yet it allows some performance improvement for an otherwise constrained machine. What you will find is that most of the users in the GTP forum are just starting off in the digital recording realm and don't want to necessarily jump is with both feet and thousands of dollars in investment. The post was meant for them.
