Anyone use Mackie MR5-8

Best buy had them on sale and they sounded pretty good. My friend told me I should get these other monitors they had that were also on sale. M-Audio. They had individual volume knobs on the back and had been hooked up to an amp and he swore they sounded better. I personaly felt like the little mackies sounded great. especially when we listened to some hip-hop sonds coming throught them The drums and bass sounded really good. Anybody think he's right or am I just looking to for buyers remorse?

well since they are active and not passive, that made a bit of a difference to the cost I bet. Although, look at it this way , the internal amps were designed specifically for them speakers.
things might sound a bit bass heavy with the speakers I guess as the cones on them are about 5" ? or so.

I don't own either (I use other model of mackies) , your ears do adjust to the speakers your using after a time though. so it's a bit subjective to the person using them. some places I used to go used one brand, and another place a different make.

What is best then? Passive or active? Sounds to me like active monitors take some hassle out of the whole process but can add a bunch more. Should I invest in a pre-amp and then get passives?? I'm lost...again.
