Off-Key Tribal Music
Howdy, I've got a great tribal song recorded in East Africa. Unfortunately, on the women's vocal track, there's one sour voice out of many. But it's very noticeable. Any ideas? I think I need a magic wand on this one. Thanks, BTU

ORIGINAL: garrigus The upcoming Melodyne Direct Note Access might work, but it's not available yet... This is scary, but I think you're absolutely right! Can you imagine? What a strange world...

I take it you have the entire recording on one stereo track? Good luck.

Howdy, There were four tracks. The male and female leads had their own tracks. The male chorus had a track. And the female chorus had a track. The problem was in the female chorus. Someone had had too much to drink and it showed. If the Melodyne Direct Note Access works as the video indicates, it really will be a magic wand for guys like me who are recording in uncontrolled situations. Thanks for the tips! BTU

Hi There, The Melodyne DNA program does sound like a magic wand, doesn't it. But the bigwigs at the music store tell me that, if I buy Pro Tools, I can take care of the problem of an off-key singer in a chorus right away. That kind of made me grind my teeth. From what I've read, Pro Tools isn't any better than Sonar. Any comments? BTU

Ask them for a demo... Often the tools we are given now a days are numerous and very helpful. But nothing beats a clean, well performed audio track. I've never found a miracle cure.

LOL Seriously, 1) I'd try volume envelopes, 2) Clone tracks 3) V-vocal --> pitch, dynamic correction 4) Try EQing in and out various fundamentals and harmonics, say at a 1 Q 5) (I'm not sure how Melodyne and Sonar integrate ... if at all) 6) Combo and fx some of the above to see if it sounds like a cool sound. I've 'listened' to Haitian singing in 'the bush' of Haiti many times. Oft such tribal music is a celestial choir, IMHO, especially live. And despite a sour voice or 2, the summation of sincere choir is a beautiful creature worth abstracting by various means, IMHO. 'Hope you get it going.
