OT: Video card question

Not really a DAW issue. My girlfriend wants dual monitors on her XP home computer.

Her mobo is ~4 years old. OTS HP Computer.

On board Video being used right now.

No AGP slot (WTF??!!??). No PCI-e slots.

3 available PCI slots.

Do I need a dual head PCI card or is a single head video card enough to run dual monitors (by using the onboard vidoe)?

She has a 22" Samsung widescreen and wants to add another 22" widescreen monitor (brand not important).

Please advise. I'm imagining what ever works for a DAW will work for a "regular" computer.

you CAN use the onboard video as the 2nd video controller and use a PCI slot with a single head video card in it. the problem might be that you'd have different max resolutions, however, and depending on the monitors and what the max resolution of the two different video controllers is, you might not get the results you want.

I had the same sitation on my DAW. I have a Dell for a DAW (and multipurpose machine, actually! GASP!). I use dual monitors but the dell only had 3 PCI slots, no AGP, no PCI-e, nothing else! I bought a dual head PCI card for fairly cheap and it works well.

You should be able to get a PCI graphics card that will make the most of the two monitors, without spending a whole lot. Set the machine up to default to it as your only graphics controller. Try for a card with two DVI outputs; DVI will look a lot better than an HD-15 connection on a monitor that size.
