Good call Bill!!

As it looks like GT4 is but a distant dream, I think you've done the right thing for you - I'm certain you are going to love GT3!

You also mention $99 for some Line 6 gear - what exactly were you looking at Bill?

Bill, before you go ordering some Line 6 gear, let us know where you are based if you don't mind.

I only ask because if you are here in the UK, I may be able to help in finding somewhere to get a good deal; if you're in the US, Doc is an absolute diamond in knowing just where to go to get stuff like this for the right price.

He he - Doc's your man then Bill.

What was the $99 product Bill - if it was a TonePort it sounds like the UX1 at that price.

I'm with you now Bill.

Man, I'm sure we're all looking forward to hearing your stuff - it sounds like before your illness you were very much into your music and you mention live stuff and records.... sounds so cool!!

Making CD's and producing MP3's for uploading to Soundclick is the goal for most of us hobbyists - with GT3 and your Marshall you will have the tools to produce these with very little extra outlay.

The Line 6 TonePort/Gearbox stuff should be seen very much as a product which will give you many more options to your recording and mixing but at this stage, the biggest benefit would be the fact that you'd be getting a good quality soundcard. In the short term though Bill, I'd even suggest that you get to grips with GT3 before exploring these extra Line 6 options, should you decide to follow that route.

Here's a few thoughts that may or may not make a lot of sense to you!

Recording

GT3, in conjunction with your Marshall will get you some great guitar recordings - this I will guarantee!

What you may also need to think about are the other parts of your project, such as drums, bass and maybe even vocals, if that's your thing.

Drums:
GT3 ships with some very usable ACIDised drum loops, there are many more available to buy and to download free. ACID loops usually consist of 1 bar recordings of a particular pattern that can be imported into your project. The generic term ACID refers to the fact that these loops will be adjusted to your project's tempo when imported without changing their pitch as would be the case normally.

Cakewalk's equivalent to ACID loops are 'Groove Clips' - these also adjust to your project's tempo and actually allow you to change the pitch as well, not so much use with drum loops but very useful for bass or guitar loops - just one recorded loop can be adjusted to play in any of the twelve possible basic 'keys'.

There are many other ways of creating a drum track in GT3 [you may even know a good 'real' drummer] but one important thing to mention is that GT3 doesn't support MIDI, so drum applications that use MIDI cannot be used in GT.

Bass:
Again, MIDI bass is unavailable in GT - pitch shifting VST's [you can use these in GT3!] will be able to drop a dry guitar signal by an octave but there is no substitute for using a real bass guitar if that's the sound you want.

If you already have a bass that's great - if you don't, even the cheapest model will sound better than a processed guitar signal.

Making CD's and/or MP3's

Once you've created a song you're happy with in GT3, it's best to export the mixed down tune to a wav file. In GT3, this process is very simple - you end up with a wave file in a location of your choice on your hard drive.

Burning your song/s to CD:
As long as you export your songs as 16bit/44.1kbps wave files [this is an option direct from GT3] you will be able to create CD's capable of being played in msot commercial CD players.

You will need some CD burning software - most PC's have this software built in, even Windows Media Player will allow you to do this.

Creating MP3 files:

Should you wish to make mp3 files of your projects to share by e-mail attachment or to upload to sites like Soundclick there are many excellent free wav→mp3 encoders available to download online, an excellent one being C-Dex, which Doc put me onto a while back.

Hope that gives you something to think about Bill

Steve

Stratman,

There's a GC in Springlfield right? About 45 minutes to an hour away? You can get the Toneport gear there. Be sure to haggle and maybe take some comparative pricing with you.

The Toneport family includes several different devices.

The GX is about $50.00 for just the base model (you can get it with the Silver or Gold Bundle plug-ins)

The UX1 is about $90.00

The UX2 is about $140.00

The KB37 is about $200.00

The UX8 is between $450 and $500

You will probably want to go over to the Line 6 website and check out what the differences are in their product line. The ccomputer recording hardware can be found here.

And the GearBox Bundels can be found here.

Mark gave me the sites I was looking for. thanks Mark! That solved that question. The UX2 seems to be what i might need. As far as recordings of my projects couldn't I just sent whoever wanted to hear what I was doing by wav. file. Seems like that would be easier.

Steve,

I used to sing about 1/3 of all the band repetoire I was in. I'm afraid of what my voice will sound like now after all the radiation treatment. I couldn't talk more than 1 minute without losing it after that. the doctors wanted to take my voice box during my surgery but I pleaded and won out .They said it deceased my chances but I couldn't picture myself speaking thru a mechanical voice box the rest of my life. Its alot more raspy now and I get depressed thinking of how I sing now. But after hearing my guitar playing what the hell.

I shouldn't worry about it Bill - compared to my singing voice you probably still sound like an operatic tenor!!

For the little extra wonga, I would say the UX2 is definitely worth getting over the UX1 though - you may not need all the extra features straight off, but stuff like the phantom power for a compressor microphone is very handy to have on board.

The UX1 DOES have phantom power, but not enough. The mic I bought a few months ago was not very useful until I bought another preamp, 45v, to power it, so if that's a consideration, Steve's suggestion is spot on.

Does the sub octaves affect pitch control or is it based on the octavia by mayer? It would be nice if I could play the bass on guitar then transpose down an octave.

Give me half hour or so Bill and I'll give that a try - it definitely does allow you to set it up at 100% one octave down mix.

I don't know about that. Transfer times of the final mix downs could be prohibitive due to large file sizes.. Much rather listen to an MP3 (at high sample rate) than to deal with transmitting WAV files. Some of the files I deal with are in the 50 to 80 MB range. That's a lot of data to move around.

Here we go Bill

This is my guitar recorded with Gearbox using one of the bass amp presets and the Sub Octaves, just click on this link:

BASS ONLY

Here's what it sounds like with a bit of a band round it - it ain't perfect, a real bass would be much better but it sits in this very rough mix ok:

BASS WITH BAND

Incidentally, apart from the drums, everything was recorded using my TonePort/Gearbox and effects found in GT3 - enjoyed that you know

I'm sure with a bit more experimentation a much cleaner sound could be obtained Bill; for what it's worth though, even a $200 bass would give you a much, much better sound.

With you now mate.

The two effects are Rotary Drum and Rotary Drum and Horn - the only speed setting appears to be 'slow' or 'fast'.

They both sound pretty good though Bill.
