Any idea how to achieve this type of bass track in recordings?

Check out the bass track on this song:

Just sounds super compressed maybe, and the amp is mic'd? I just think it sounds awesome but I've yet been able to get any bass recordings I do to sound like that... I'm thinkin' maybe it's serial compression (one compressor right after the other)... But yeah, is that something the bassist can achieve right out of the box with their gear, and so then it's nothing I'd even need to do after the fact? i.e. i'd just record it and it would already sound like the above song bass track?

Thoughts?

That bass really does sound great, so smooth but right in there, never lost in the mix. Very McCartney-esque.

My guess is that it was recorded direct and heavily compressed.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

yeah, it is smooth eh... some of the slides from one note to the other sound like moog leads... heh... That's also where the "effect" of whatever they're doing really comes out with the bass track... when you can hear every little part of the slide (or whatever the playing technique is called...)

I've got a Spector Euro that can occasionally sound like that when I run it direct through my Avalon 737 - with compression. Fairly quick attack and release with 5:1 @ 5-7Db of reduction.

Of course, it all depends on the song and the player though.

Bass is such a finicky instrument. The player and the istrument are more relevant there - to me - than in any other place in a song.

I would suggest that you remove the link if this is not your own song (copyright and all that). All that can be used under fair use laws is a portion of the song (less than 30 seconds) to illustrate a point (such as you are doing here).

Giving proper credit to the artist when you post the snippet is also a good idea.
