questions about lightscribe

Hi,
I went to burn a back up DVD for my Komplete5 updates this morning on my brand new system.

It has a lightscribe capable DVD/CD burner.

I haven't learned anything about light scribe yet... can I buy compatible discs at the big box office supply stores?

I turned off lightscribe for this burn.

What would have happened if I had left it on using an old stock DVD+RW that I had on hand? Bad Stuff?

Are light scribe capable discs commonly available in plain white?

thanks for any help you can offer,
mike

edit to add: apparently you have to remove your disc and turn it over to use the light scribe? so I guess it wold be hard to do it by mistake.

Quite right, Mike. After burning the CD, flip it over and print it. It must be a disc designed for that purpose. I believe it's Memorex that makes the actual Lightscribe discs, but there are other brands for thermal printing, including TaiyoYuden. I got mine from musicians friend. The printing process takes a while, 15-20 minutes per disc, and the choices for printing may be limited. I understand Nero offers more choices of images to print, and so does LightScribe, for a price, of course.

Oh yeah: I think the Light scribe discs come in different colors, but I only found the T-Ys in silver and white.

    Thanks very much.

I'm surprised it takes twenty minutes... but I can't wait to try it.

What do you think Mike? Had a chance to scribe one yet?
The color discs aren't hard to find. You can see some here

I haven't scribed many but at least one on everything but white. I like it...no hassle with printers.

You won't harm anything by accident.
You have to use lightscribe media... and follow thru with the label burn process (flipping the disc over).
I've got three lightscribe burners... and never actually use the feature.

I've burned a few Lightscribe discs. I wasn't really impressed until I figured out that you can do graphics from picture files and that sort of thing. It's actually pretty cool.

Lightscribe is pretty cool but it is awefully slow. If you could do it on another computer from the one your are using then do because when I've used the CPU for other things, it left blank lines in the image.
