V-Amp 2 noise

Has anyone tried the HUM-X by Ebtech to eliminate hum and /or ground loop noise?

The offending component seems to be my V-Amp 2. I love the sounds it has but on high drive and/ or high

gain patches I have up to -32 on the sonar meter without playing. This does not happen W/ headphones
directly out of V-amp 2, only when using V-amp 2 to record in SHS6XL.

I've read about this Ebtech device- seems like what I'm dealing with.

IF anyone has tried, does it work and, can/should more than one component be used with the HUM-X?

Thanks, Walker

When you're getting the noise up to -32dB in Sonar, can you hear it through your monitors? If so, what does it sound like?

    Walker,
I'm with you about the V-AMPII noise. Although I can't say mine is a hum. I think the noise I experience is just inherent to that unit. Still it will be interesting to see if you can alleviate your issue with this HUM-X thing (never heard of it myself). Good luck.

The V-AmpII noise is hit and miss with the each unit.............

    I've owned 4 of them .........

I liked the units alot, so I bought the rack V-Amp Pro..........the Pro's sound a hell of a lot better and are dead quiet............plus you get the analog Ultra -G cab sim and Digital out.
The V-Ampire and heads are very quiet as well.

I am the preverbial shoe string soldier for now - having to record late nights/early AM to let sleeping babes rest undisturbed (in the next room).

Therefore, no monitors -just ADH50 headphones, and yeah I can hear the noise in them.

I have researched some and now believe I should try to decrease ground loops, surges, sags and such as well. A friend offered that the use of a UPS ( or CPS), housing a power inverter and an isolation transformer would be safe and more effective. Looks great on paper and is less expensive - just over half the cost of the HUM-X ---@ Walmart even. Belkin brand, I believe.

Zungle, I will be utilizing my warranty exchange option W/ Behringer, with plans to get the rack version if the replacement V-amp 2 is still noisy. If it is OK I may still get the UPS for some measure of security.
Thanks for all the input, I'll report the results, (and keep my reciepts). Walker

I've had the VampII tabletop unit, and mine had a high pitched whine on all patches. The Ebtech didn't / won't help that issue.

I now use the VampII rackmount unit, and it doesn't have the whine.

Main difference between the boxes is plastic vs. metal chassis, and grounding on the power line--

Given this, I think the whine is actually due to the non-existent shielding of the plastic unit, and it's lack of ground. My suspicion is if you pick up the "Pro" unit, the problems will go away..

I will be giving the V-amp II another chance by utilizing the warranty exchange option, and I,ll be saving my pennies for the rack mount.

In the mean time I,ve tried to research more and understand this 'war' on noise/hum.

It would seem that both hum and ground loops are mostly products of a systems ground circuitry, other noise culprits would be varying current and external sources of EMI.

This has made me consider the benefits of a UPS. A line-interactive type houses a power inverter and an isolation transformer.
In theory, cleaner, regulated current as well as elimination of ground loops through the isolation transformer.

With this UPS and properly run cables and such, it seems like it would work. What am I missing, has a UPS (or CPS) helped anyone W/noise?

hmmmm.....I've always thought my unit (desktop plastic) was just inherently noisy but you guys are making me wonder now. Wouldn't a hum or cycle noise associated with electrical circuitry or interference be consistent through all patches? I would think so. Mine doesn't do that. I can turn off lights, monitors, etc. and still the noisy patches are noisy. My thought was they were noisy cause they were high gain type patches (distortion).

    tony--

My suspicion is there's a bit of noise that gets into the input stage prior to the AD converter. When you run that through a high gain patch it's a lot more present than on clean patches, but (at least for me) when I'd turn clean signals up loudly, the whine would still be there. It was also a lot worse when I'd place the plastic unit on top of my keystation pro 88. Not so with the metal unit.
