Hi. Im new to cakewalk. Ive read some of the forums and cant seem to find my answer. Currently im using my built in soundcard on my laptop. Im going to get a new one soon, cause im not sure if its the soundcards fault. But When I try to record two tracks, they do not line up at all....When I record, it sounds lined up,. but playback is off by a couple miliseconds. Can any one help me

    At the same time?

You need a question mark (?). Was that helpful?

But seriously, we need more info...are you recording one track at a time and they are off? Or are you recording two tracks at the same time, and they are off (quite unlikely, I suppose)?

Im using the standard Conexant audio card input and output. I havent messed around with too much midi right now, so its mainly the audio. And it occurs when i begin recording my second track. Actually, it even happens if i keep the metronome in the playback, ITS OFF WITH THE METRONOME TOO....And no my tempo is not that bad.haha.
    Any ideas?

Good luck with using that conexant card. These built in cards are not made for audio recording and if your audio is off, it could be due to user error, config error, or that the conexant card just has the cheapest clocking device ever built in the universe.
This is from Cakewalk, i'm quoting them below
Conexant audio cards are generally provided with your computer. They are designed for general media playback and, though they will work with Cakewalk software, you would get better performance using a device designed specifically for audio recording.

I would assume you are listening to the first track and then playing as you record the second right?

The reason it isn't lined up is that when you playback there is what we call "Latency" This is the time it takes to process the audio so you can hear it.

Sonar has an option under "Project Audio" I believe.. don't quote me on that... that allows you to change the latency for playback...

When you playback the 1st track it takes "Time" to process ne\\before you ghear it, so you are "playing" in sync but it won't be in sync in your project ... get it?

I always use some latency (if using effects and Eq's and so fourth it takes longer to process you need it) and when I am done recording a new track... I simply slide it in line with the 1st track...

You have to "Right Click" in your timeline and set your snapping to "Absolute Time" and then select "Sample"

This allows you to slide a file as little as one sample at a time.

    Have fun

Actually yes... I have trained my ears for time aligning sound systems... when you get down to less than 15 milliseconds it sounds like phase instead of a delay.... You can test this yourself if you want with a simple tone... lower frequencies are easiest... so take 60Hz and record it into two tracks..... The play them back and shift the 2nd track a few milliseconds either way.... the phasing will reduce the 60Hz fundamental wave and cause the volume to drop gradually as you shift the track in time.

However for the above example I expressed a decision to use snap properties down to the sample to allow the track to be placed "exactly" where it sounds the best... obviously by the description he gave he is talking about 40+ ms of latency (without training and really testing the human ear cannot decifer less then 20 ms in most cases) or he wouldn't hear it being so off in timing.....

    Have fun
