Still searching for monitors...

I have searched the forums, and it helped a little bit - but not too much. I been using two KRK V6 (Version 1).

I've been leaning toward the Mackie MR8's, but apparently they're not too popular. I've heard and read about the Yamahas that were comparable, and a lot of people like the Adams.

I guess more suggestions would be welcome, and I'll phrase it like this: What is the best mix of price and performance?

My projects are not "pro", but I am pretty anal about making it sound as professional as possible. I was in a band that recorded for years, so I'm not a newbie that way - and I tend to record almost everything direct anyway (sans vocals, acoustic guitar and ambient noises).

$1500 for those. While I absolutely understand the critical importance of speakers - seems a little higher on the price side than I'm willing to go on. Has a bunch of bells and whistles though.

Ditto on Lance... go & listen and compare with the same source of music...

I did that and decided, with size requirements, budget requirements, and some other factors in mind to go with the Mackie MR5... they did a decent job.... definitely not the best by far, but I'm not mixing for commercial national release either.

I find these 5" speakers have plenty of low end response...can get plenty loud with built in amps, and if I need more bass...I can add a sub. They do a good job for me.... at $300/pair....I'm satisfied.

I do plan on going to the brick and mortar, but they don't carry every kind and I wanted to narrow the scope.

I do plan on going to the brick and mortar, but they don't carry every kind and I wanted to narrow the scope.

Why? It sounds like the only narrowing you need to do is budgetary. If YOU like a set of speakers, and can afford them, why would our opinions matter? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm seriously asking...

Personally, subjectively, I think the JBL LSR6325p's are the best under-$3k speakers on the market. I get great mixes on them. You might hate them. Doesn't mean I don't get great mixes on them, though. I bought my pair for $540. Mostly they sell in the round-$650 range, I believe.

My 2nd set of speakers are the KRK Rocket-5's. I don't like them much, but they work GREAT as a Boom-Box representation! LOL - Oh, and they're WAY better than anything else in the $200 per set range, to my ears.

Good luck! It's a fun search you're on. Enjoy the journey. After you have your new speakers, it's time to get to work.

Lazarous, you don't sound like a jerk at all.

Opinions matter because it can either save you from a costly mistake or perhaps guide you in a direction that you otherwise wouldn't have considered.

For example, I recently bought tires (a little different). I researched and researched and narrowed it down to a few models and then contacted people on them. It turns out one had a defect in a few batches that wasn't mentioned anywhere. I stayed away erring on the side of caution.

To me, if people from many different sources say something is not dependable or breaks easily (or the support sucks as isd the case with my FW-1884) - then I'd like to know.

I also like to know practical experiences people have with equipment. Because Guitar Center and Sam Ash do not carry every kind of speaker or have it to demo - so maybe I have to find another shop that has something different.

Also, I am looking for the best combo of quality and price and wanted to hear if a range came clear on that so maybe I can explore that class of speaker. We all know everything is about money (more so these days), and the KRKs worked great until one blew up - so I wasn't planning on buying a set of speakers this month (and it's a little bit of a hit - I mean, who LIKES to spend a lot of money?).

So I'm just doing my due diligence. I realize it's incredibly subjective picking monitors but I wanted to bounce my thoughts off the and ask what they thought.

Picking monitors is an excruciating experience. I've been through that agony twice now, first for my first set of real studio monitors, then again when it came time to upgrade.

It's difficult because you can't always find a local retailer that actually has the models you're interested in, and even when you find them it's usually in a terrible listening environment such as GC store (ugh). So what do you do? Just go by other people's recommendations and hope for the best? There's too much money at stake for that approach.

My recommendation is that you seek out a pro audio dealer in your area. They will have models that the big chains don't carry in most stores. They will have a quieter environment to listen in. They will have more knowledgable staff. They will primarily carry brands and models that have a good reputation in the pro community. And surprisingly, they are no more expensive than other retailers.

The trick is finding one, because they don't have a big storefront on a main street or in a mall. They may only have a small sign in the lobby of a nondescript office building. The best way to find them is to talk to professional recording studios and asking them where they go locally for gear. Or, if that's too intimidating, check with manufacturers' web sites, which sometimes list dealers.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

You could always do the Musiciansfriend test drive. If you can't check them out at a store first, buy a pair online with free shipping and no tax. Try them for up to 30 days and return them if you don't like them for a full refund and you only have to pay return shipping. And since you didn't pay incoming shipping, that's kind of a wash.
This gives you the best listening environment for them, your own. Plus your own gear and your own mixes.
Maybe it's a little "questionable" ethically. I guess that just depends on your ethics. At these prices and the fact that they freely offer the option, It doesn't bother me. But maybe that's just me.
If you do send them back, some other guy that knows he likes that pair, will be able to buy them at a discount price. So everyone is happy.

Original V6's are no slouch. I've got a buddy with a wall full of platinum and gold albums who uses them all day every day. Most of the new stuff out there is no better than what you already have. Its not the speakers.

One of the V6's blew out - that's what started me on the quest for new monitors. I liked them until the one blew, and they are 5 years old now.

Look at the Dynaudio BM5A. That is a great sounding monitor. I have them, and will not look back. About $1000.00 for the pair. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/BM5A/

I called KRK tech support, and the problem is most likely the whole board in there - which parts + labor will be like $500 at the least.

Doesn't seem like the smart thing to do. Unless any of you know someone in the Atlanta area who repairs monitors. Do you?
