wow thanks for the comment soulpuppy,
we use guitar rig 3 for the guitars and ampeg svx for bass and bfd2 for drums.
i will try and listen to your stuff but i am on dial up and it realy sucks lol.
my mixes didnt start sounding decent till i started doing it all in the box so to say.
i just dont have the proper room to record instruments open air the way they should be recorded. all stuff was tracked in sonar 7 pe using a m-audio fast track pro usb series card.
again thanks for the listen it means alot to me

thanks those are bfd2 which is quite a pain in the butt to learn but it gives back alot once you do.
most drummers i have tried out for the band think the drums are from our last drummer till i tell them different. the cowbell came from dimension pro i believe and i put it in manually with my axiom 61.
i use the multi outputs in bfd2 and assign each drum piece its own track and then i eq and compress to fit in the mix.

    nos rocks,

Great guitar song. Nice thick wall of sound. Excellent job on the mix. My only comment/suggestion is to change up the vocals a bit. They seem to me to feel to repetitive. I think with a change into a chorus with more of a singing part rather than more of a rap feel would put this song over the top. The songwriting was great.

    Great job,

    hey tim

gotta say this is one genre i totally hate...wish fred durst and the korn lot would never have happened - but having said that, your mix is excellent! the downtuned guitars work well, you've obviosuly paid a lot of attention to eq to keep the guita and bass separate. personally i'd have made the bass a bit dirtier rather than the clean tone you have. drums sound good, though i'd put the cowbell in the recycle bin. love the screamo vox, more of those please! short and to the point, like to hear more of your stuff

Tim, It sounds good. Drums do sound real. I would boost vox a pinch as lyric is inaudible and from the title of the piece it looks like they're supposed to be heard.

Sounds like a good mix to me! Those drums DO sound good and the guitars are great. I would bring the vox up a bit too. The abrupt ending was a bit of a surprise, but it works!

JMO, I thought the lead vocal in "Light of Deception" is a little too loud, just a bit. There's a lot I like about the song, especially the guitar tones - there's a few lines to me sounded Iron Maiden-esque.

"Wasn't Easy to See" - my favorite one - reminded me a bit of STP.

Nice job and thanks for posting your songs.

Good mix, especially on the guitars. I usually get mud whenever I try to add that much drive to my guitar. Good vocals and separation. Very interesting sound at about 2:20, i have no idea what that was but it transitioned to the end of the song quite well.

thanks so much for all the listens and comments guys.
    it realy means alot.
just in case anyone else is interested we posted some more songs since i opened this posting.
the guitars on these mixes are laying in the mix pretty much the way we recorded them with
guitar rig 3, the only eq i did on them was to highpass with a q10 eq at 30hz to pull out the low end rumble. the bass and the drums took alot of work to fit in and its probably because of the way i let the guitars rock out lol.
of course this was all done in my spare bedroom which has zero sound treatment and has tons of standing bass waves and reflections. i used several commercial cds for reference and i went to my paz analyzer and compared with the commercial stuff.
again thanks for the listens guys, tim.

    Hi, Tim,

Dynamite mix, nice thick guitars and the bass and drums still have plenty of room to breathe. Great song, sort of like Nine Inch Nails meets ZZ Topp. Good job!

thanks bob your comments are most generous and are appreciated.
my main thing with the mix on these songs was to try hard for a good clean dynamic mix,and i realy tried not to crush the life outta them with compresion. since no one has stated they sound crushed with compression i feel i have achieved this.
thanks alot to all who have taken the time to listen and comment.

I agree with the others a really good song. I think you've done a excellent job on the mix. If any thing maybe just a bit more volume on the vox. How many tracks did you have to get that guitar sound. GREAT JOB!

Wow, I'm glad I had this turned down a bit when it started, it's mixed "right up there".

    This song is an interesting dichotomy, your voice has a touch of country to it, i.e., Boceifus (which is a good thing). But the song is like death metal? It presents an interesting Ying/Yang. I think it was good for this genera. My only contribution/suggestions would be;

    1. Give a high pass on that rhythm guitar track so it’s not competing with the bass.

    2. Give it a break, or change it up so the guitar plays throughout. It’s a nice melody, but it never changes and never breaks, it never builds.

    3. Throw some shreading lead fills and perhaps a break in there.

    thanks for the listens guys,
i am writing all the suggestions down and am going to go over them with the other 2 members and see what happens.
all songs have 2 distorted guitar tracks with guitar rig3 as a amp, one is panned hard left and one is hard right 100% on each end.
theres very little eq and hardly no compresion added, of course there are some cuts and boosts on the main instruments like guitar kick and bass but just enough to roll over behtoven and make room. thanks for the listens.

OH YEAH! This has it all, great feel, mix, 'walls of in your face guitar tone' and perfect vocals. I don't see anything in the mix that needs fixing. If I could get my guitar tone like this, I'd quite my day job Tim you've done a great job on this - top notch job!

you are very generous Jon C.
although i do like the mix on my bands songs i am my hardest critic.
i always hear something that i didnt hear before and it drives me nuts till i fix it lol.
as far as the writing of the songs go will cooper is one of the finest musicians i have ever had the privilege to work with, without him nos would come to a screeching halt.
his full time job is promoting and building what we hope will be one of the premier metal bands someday.
he works everyday doing this and takes a lot of pride in it .
and what can i say about our newest member Kenny on vox ( he never stops amazing me with his talent) guys let me be honest , when he sang most of these songs he hadn't even heard them before lol, will had sang a scratch track to them and Kenny went off that.
and on many of them we went with his first take.
anyway im glad you guys enjoyed them and took the time to listen.
and heres my promise to you, even though i am on dial up i will listen to as many of your songs as i possibly can and give back what has been giving to me.
    thanks everyone Tim.

I didn't get around to hearing the first track you posted but I'm glad I got to this one.

I got no crits here at all I like it just the way it is, everything about it.

Those drums are killer and you certainly had me fooled it was a 'drumpler'.

I liked the vox sitting back where they are, I loved the guitar tones, the strolling pace of it, hey, even the cowbell works for me.

    Great stuff.

this is the radio ready edited version lol, the original lyrics went a little different but it never got recorded that way.
in fact we just sent our cd out for radio play and it went out to a list or record company's as well.

Tim, I listened to this the other night when I reviewed your site. Nice mix on the guitars. I'm a poor one to judge as this type of music came on the scene between quiting my road days and getting back into playing. That time frame I spent totally immersed in jazz. So I really don't know much about the genre. But I can appreciate how much work it takes to get a level mix and a "clean distored" sound. I thought the drums were a little too loud, but then as we discussed, I'm a poor one to judge drums . I like the words, clever. Consistent mix. What are you using for your guitars, pedals, preamp, amp, etc. ?

    hi daryl,
    thanks for the listen,
quote:What are you using for your guitars, pedals, preamp, amp, etc. ?
the guitars were done with a ibanez rg570 through a software amp emulation guitar rig 3.
the bass guitar was run through ampeg svx bass amp emulator.
i used the stock pres in my m-audio fast track pro for vox.
and there are lots of plug ins on these mixes from waves ,cakewalk and many others.
all signals recorded in 24 bit 48khz and were recorded in at a level of -6db at the peaks.
i payed very close attention to the -6db at the peaks for the headroom it allows.
again thanks for the listen tim.
