Lightscribe

Hi

I'm looking to buy a new dvd drive to print direct onto cd's using the lightscribe method. I have seen a few drives that use Sata connection. As I have 3 spare sata sockets on my motherboard can these be used for a dvd drive or are they only for hard drives?

I can't answer your question, but thought I'd warn you about lightscribe - it's very, very slow to burn an image onto a disk. The results are pretty good at the highest quality setting, but that takes 25 minutes or so to burn the image. The medium setting gives OK results, and takes about 15 minutes.
I'm happy with the results, but it's no good at all for big runs - just too slow (heck - I can burn an audio CD much faster than I can print an image on the other side).

I'd take an ink jet printer without hesitation. I haven't heard much good about lightscribe. Perhaps it's ok for some purposes.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Have heard abt the speed implications so it will only be used to burn a song title and artist.

I already have a inkjet printer which prints very well onto cd's unfortunately, the ink never completely dries and so it is very easy to smudge the label. There is the option to apply a sealer from aerosol can but it doesnt leave a very good finish. This is why I was thinking about using lightscribe.

You never mentioned how many disks you were planning to make and print for this project of yours.

Light scribe, as memtioned above is really slow, and the disks are way more expensive.

I'd suggest a commercial duplicating company if you're doing more than just a few for friends. To sell at gigs...I'd go commercial.

I was going to mention Inkjet printers and printable disks.... but you said you already have one and it's not satisfactory.... so I'd look into the commercial jobbers and check prices with them.

Some commercials will do runs as small as 25 CD's ...some even less...the price per unit is higher, but the quality is tops....

Hmm - anyway, in response to your original question, yes you connect your SATA dvd/cd burner right to one of the empty ports.

Coming late to the party, but I like lightscribe for labeling a couple discs here and there. It looks fantastic, is easy to do, doesn't take any more real-estate for a printer, but like the others say, it does take a long time. For simple text (images are much slower still) at draft or normal settings it takes ~ 5-10 minutes, the more text to print, the longer it takes.
