Background applications

My wife has things in start-up that is eating up my ram and seems to constantly access the hard drive. I asked her what she's done or added and she says"I dunno". One thing in the toolbar that wasn't there before is Safely Remove Hardware. I don't know anything about whats being used in the background but I now have distortion and dropout in GT Pro 3 that wasn't there before. PLEASE HELP!

"Safely Remove Hardware" sounds like there's a USB device connected. Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to access Task Manager and see what's going on -- applications and processes.

we're connected to the internet with DLS and my wife says it's on always on ,hense the bill I get every month. I've been using my yamaha keyboard from all the sampled sounds. Mostly for Drums , i can play each part individually or in combination with my fingers and thumb. It really works well but I haven't had the distortion before.

There are web resources to help you find out what all those applications and processes are. One that I've used is AnswersThatWork.com. I found this in a great book called Hacking WindowsXP by Steve Sinchak. It shows you how to find out and modify what programs load at startup, as well as tons of other performance stuff. Tweaking those things makes a big difference in stability for a machine running GTP3.

Do you have a separate user account for music stuff? If not, it might help. You could set it up not to load anything you don't need for music, disable the network connection (no DSL/internet or home networking, but better performance for everything else), tweak the desktop theme and cosmetics, etc.

I got a free download called "End It All" that seemed to help. I'm not sure what I can and can't close though and this program won't close anything that's may harm computer function. But there is still ,after that, 20 listed.

Twenty is pretty normal. If you research each process and find out what it is and what it's doing, you can decide if any of those remaining need to be killed. Some of them may be services you don't need and can be set not to launch on start-up.
