Possible to have zero latency monitoring with MOTU?

Hi,

I just got my MOTU 8pre, having recently return 2 Saffires with defective noisy channels. Anyway, one really cool thing about the Saffire was that I could hear what I was recording, but WITHOUT using the input monitoring button on the track in Sonar. It was built into the Focusrite control panel software. I preferred that because when you use the input monitoring button on the track, there is a slight latency.

Is there a way to do the same thing with the MOTU 8Pre, that is, 0 latency monitorying? Maybe using the Cue Mix program or something? I know a lot of people use MOTU stuff on this forum, so if there's a way, I would think that some of you know how.

Thank you,
Brian

    Yes,

    Use the Cue Mix"system".

    I use the motu ultra with the same usb/FW drivers as you do and im able to get 1.9ms in ASIO and WDm driver modes. Can you get that low?? If not, youll need to route Cue mix so it doesnt go thru your pc first.

    I use zero-latency monitoring with my MOTU 828MkII, a close sibling of the 8Pre. Works great. I don't believe you actually need CueMix, it's just much handier than the front-panel controls on the interface itself. I've added CueMix to my SONAR Tools menu so it's easy to pop up during a session, and usually have it onscreen while composing/jamming.

    Bit, how did you add it to your tools menu??

    Create a registry key called "CueMix" under HKLM\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\Tools Menu.

    Create five values under that key:
    ExePath (REG_SZ, containing the path to MOTU CueMix Console.exe)
    MenuText (REG_SZ, the text you want shown on the menu)
    Modal (REG_DWORD, set to zero)
    StatusBarText (REG_SZ, the text you want on the status bar)
    Type (REG_SZ, set to "Generic")

    Or, you can copy and paste the following text into a .REG file and import it via regedit:

    ================= Cut Here =============

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\Tools Menu\CueMix]
    "ExePath"="C:\\Program Files\\MOTU\\Audio\\Apps\\MOTU CueMix Console.exe"
    "MenuText"="CueMix"
    "StatusBarText"="CueMix"
    "Type"="Generic"
    "Modal"=dword:00000000

    Bit -

    I have the MOTU Ultralite and cannot get zero latency monitoring to work. I have a Roland VG-99 and have been trying to set up input monitoring for it using the VG-99 driver as my input source for the live audio to be monitored. Since it's a virtual input this may be the problem (just like a synth).

    One question I have: Does the live audio source have to come in through a physical input (i.e. the mic input or one of the other six analog inputs (#'s 3 - 8) before input monitoring with zero latency will work?

    Thanks,

    Dale

    Yes. That's how it works: your instruments and mics are routed internally (within the interface itself) straight to the desired outputs rather than having to go through the computer. Consequently, you're not going to get zero-latency monitoring on, say, a soft synth. It's one of the reasons I still rely mostly on outboard hardware synths even though I have lots of cool soft synths and samplers at my disposal.

    Bit, why not use your outboard hardware for recording MIDI, then bring in the soft synths, if needed, when mixing? To me it's the best of both worlds.
